Brazil has been churning out terrifyingly good metal since before I was born, and DIATRIBES is the latest proof that the São Paulo scene still has plenty of teeth. Their debut, Degenerate, dropped on March 20th via Brutal Records, and it's exactly the kind of mid-tempo, neck-snapping groove that makes you want to put your head through a wall.

Le Brésil produit du metal terriblement bon depuis avant ma naissance, et DIATRIBES est la preuve que la scène de São Paulo a encore beaucoup de dents. Leur premier album, Degenerate, est sorti le 20 mars via Brutal Records, et c'est exactement le genre de groove mid‑tempo, à vous briser le cou, qui donne envie de défoncer un mur.

What's cool here is that they aren't trying to be the fastest or the most technical band on the planet. Instead, Gladyson Rivero and Marcelo Souza focus on these massive, swinging riffs that feel like a mix of old-school Sepultura and the sheer weight of Vader or Lamb of God. There's a moment in the track "Hostility Within" where the groove just locks in so hard it feels like the whole song is breathing. It's heavy, but it's got a "swing" to it that you just don't get with those hyper-edited modern bands.

Ce qui est cool ici, c'est qu'ils n'essaient pas d'être le groupe le plus rapide ou le plus technique de la planète. Au lieu de ça, Gladyson Rivero et Marcelo Souza se concentrent sur ces riffs massifs et balancés qui rappellent un mélange du Sepultura old-school et du poids pur de Vader ou Lamb of God. Il y a un moment dans « Hostility Within » où le groove s'installe si fort qu'on a l'impression que la chanson respire. C'est lourd, mais ça a un « swing » qu'on ne retrouve pas avec ces groupes modernes hyper‑édités.

The production was handled by Niko Teixeira at Audiolab Extreme, and thank god, he didn't over-polish it. You can actually hear Sergio Roma's bass rattling around in there, and the drums sound like actual wooden sticks hitting actual drumheads. It's raw, it's hostile, and Danilo Luna's vocals have this grit that moves between deep growls and a more desperate, aggressive mid-range that really fits the theme of societal decay they're yelling about.

La production a été assurée par Niko Teixeira à l'Audiolab Extreme, et Dieu merci, il ne l'a pas surpolie. On entend vraiment la basse de Sergio Roma vibrer, et la batterie sonne comme de vraies baguettes en bois frappant de vraies peaux. C'est brut, hostile, et la voix de Danilo Luna a ce grain qui passe entre les growls profonds et un médium plus désespéré et agressif, collant parfaitement au thème de la décadence sociétale qu'ils dénoncent.

If you miss the days when death metal actually had a "groove" you could move to, Degenerate is going to be your new favorite workout soundtrack. Si les jours où le death metal avait un « groove » sur lequel bouger vous manquent, Degenerate va devenir votre nouvelle bande‑son d'entraînement favorite.
