THAT TIGHT, FOUR-CORNERED BOX IN KILSYTH

What actually caught my eye with ANA's new video for "Papa" is the physical setup. They filmed it at Koukei Studio in Kilsyth, and the whole band is crammed inside a tight, four-cornered boxed set.

Ce qui a vraiment attiré mon attention dans la nouvelle vidéo d'ANA pour « Papa », c'est le dispositif physique. Ils l'ont filmée au Koukei Studio à Kilsyth, et tout le groupe est entassé dans un décor de boîte exiguë à quatre coins.

Instead of the usual sprawling green-screen fantasy castles you get with symphonic metal, you have five musicians, who perform as "masked super-humans", facing right at each other in a tiny enclosure. I keep thinking about the mechanics of that shoot. Cody Lamb's bass neck, Josh Mak's guitar, Andres Felipe Martinez Osorio behind a drum kit, Mark Shi on keys, and vocalist Anna Khristenko, all staring at one another through masks while trying not to collide. The text mentions a "confrontational energy" caused by those visual angles, and it makes sense just thinking about the spatial restriction.

Au lieu des châteaux fantasy sur fond vert typiques du metal symphonique, on a cinq musiciens, qui se produisent comme des « super-humains masqués », qui se font face dans un minuscule espace. Je n'arrête pas de penser à la logistique de ce tournage. Le manche de basse de Cody Lamb, la guitare de Josh Mak, Andres Felipe Martinez Osorio derrière sa batterie, Mark Shi aux claviers, et la chanteuse Anna Khristenko, tous se regardant à travers leurs masques tout en essayant de ne pas se percuter. Le texte mentionne une « énergie de confrontation » causée par ces angles visuels, et ça semble évident rien qu'en imaginant la contrainte spatiale.

The song itself is built from a posthumous letter Khristenko wrote to her father. It's an incredibly heavy foundation, engineered and mixed by Chris Themelco at Monolith Studios and mastered by Thomas "Plec" Johansson at The Panicroom. I'm listening to how the orchestral grandeur hits alongside that rigid sonic precision, but my mind keeps looping back to Peter Coulson's camera angles inside that wooden box.

La chanson elle-même est construite à partir d'une lettre posthume que Khristenko a écrite à son père. Une base incroyablement lourde, enregistrée et mixée par Chris Themelco aux Monolith Studios et masterisée par Thomas « Plec » Johansson au Panicroom. J'écoute comment la grandeur orchestrale s'associe à cette rigueur sonore, mais mon esprit revient sans cesse aux angles de caméra de Peter Coulson dans cette boîte en bois.

There's another track on the album called "Shadow of Life" where they apparently treat death as a vital shadow giving life its shape, and another one titled "Hate Me." I haven't gotten to those yet. I'm still just staring at the CD digipak of Motivated By Death, wondering how they managed the logistics of that tight studio set.

Il y a un autre morceau sur l'album, « Shadow of Life », où ils considèrent la mort comme une ombre vitale qui donne sa forme à la vie, et un autre intitulé « Hate Me ». Je n'y suis pas encore arrivé. Je reste juste à fixer le digipak CD de Motivated By Death, à me demander comment ils ont géré la logistique de ce tournage en espace restreint.
