Review: ANOTHER DEMON - "As Above So Below"
NYC THRASHERS RE‑RELEASE THEIR DEBUT EP VIA RAGEBREED RECORDS WITH A MEAN, RAZOR‑SHARP EDGE
NYC thrashers Another Demon have officially re‑released their debut EP As Above So Below via Ragebreed Records, backed by global digital distribution through Earache. When an underground thrash release hypes up a legendary guest solo from James Murphy, my initial reaction is pure skepticism. Too many bands use a massive name to mask weak songwriting and generic riffing. But looking at Max Capshaw's hardcore background with Sick of It All and Burn, this isn't just another group of kids playing dress‑up in 80s battle vests. Still, I hit play on "Drawn and Quartered" half‑expecting a gimmick built around a guest appearance.

Trop de groupes utilisent un nom imposant pour masquer une écriture faible et un riffing générique. Mais en regardant le passé hardcore de Max Capshaw avec Sick of It All et Burn, ce n'est pas juste un groupe de gamins qui jouent à se déguiser avec des battle vests des années 80. Pourtant, j'ai lancé « Drawn and Quartered » en m'attendant à moitié à un gadget construit autour d'une apparition invitée.

What actually hits on As Above So Below is how relentlessly sharp and aggressive the rhythm section actually feels. Instead of serving as a passive backdrop for guest solos, tracks like "Reduced to Ash" and "Skull Vessel" deliver a mean, NYHC‑infused thrash crunch anchored by frantic tempos and bone‑dry guitar tone. The vocals from Max Capshaw ditch any attempt at clean crossover polish, keeping a raw edge that keeps the tracks sounding unrefined and hostile. Murphy's solo on "Drawn and Quartered" is undeniably smooth, but the band doesn't rely on it to keep the release afloat. The mid‑tempo grinding on "War March" and the brooding, chaotic progression of the title track prove that these guys can write a solid, menacing riff without needing outside star power. I went in expecting a glorified promo gimmick. I got a mean, razor‑sharp slab of East Coast thrash that actually delivers.
Ce qui frappe vraiment sur As Above So Below, c'est à quel point la section rythmique semble implacablement tranchante et agressive. Au lieu de servir de toile de fond passive aux solos invités, des morceaux comme « Reduced to Ash » et « Skull Vessel » offrent un crunch thrash méchant infusé de NYHC, ancré par des tempos frénétiques et un son de guitare très sec. Les voix de Max Capshaw abandonnent toute tentative de polissage crossover propre, gardant un bord brut qui fait sonner les morceaux comme non raffinés et hostiles. Le solo de Murphy sur « Drawn and Quartered » est indéniablement fluide, mais le groupe ne s'appuie pas dessus pour maintenir l'EP à flot. Le grinding mid‑tempo de « War March » et la progression sombre et chaotique du morceau éponyme prouvent que ces gars savent écrire un riff solide et menaçant sans avoir besoin d'une star extérieure. Je m'attendais à un gadget promo glorifié. J'ai eu une plaque méchante et tranchante de thrash de la côte Est qui assure vraiment.
