Interview ROTTEN BRAIN

Après quelques splits et démos, le duo nous présente leur tout premier album intitulé "Wait For Putrefaction". L'album, qui est sorti 15 mars, est fortement inspiré par les écrits de H.P. Lovecraft

Je tiens également à remercier sincèrement le groupe ROTTEN BRAIN pour le temps consacré à cette interview.

1) Pouvez-vous nous parler de votre parcours musical jusqu'à la création de votre premier album ? Comment vous êtes-vous rencontrés. Comment et quand avez-vous commencé à jouer ensemble ?

Bonjour, Merci pour cette interview ! Eddy est l'ex batteur de Bestial Soul (thrash metal) et de Decaying (brutal death metal) , c'est un habitué du metal extreme. Pour moi, tout a débuté avec un groupe d'amis. Je faisais déjà de la basse depuis quelques années. Un jour, un de mes amis m'a proposé de monter un groupe et de jouer de la guitare alors que je n'avais jamais mis les mains dessus! On as monté notre premier projet de Noise Core surnommé "Pure" puis Intense Mortification. De file en aiguille, J'ai monté mon premier projet appeler Irkala qui as donné naissance à mon tout premier enregistrement ( une catastrophe dont je suis fier mine de rien haha ) ! Un peu plus tard,un collectif de black metal nommé "garde noir" dont je faisais parti a vus le jour et j'officiais en tant que compositeur guitariste, bassiste dans Apokalupsis ( projets qui est encore en marche et dont le premier album est en cours d'écriture ). Rotten Brain est né véritablement en 2018 avec quelques compos non diffusées puis une demo en 2020. Le projet était à la base un projet solo mais comprenant que je ne savais pas programmer de batterie et ayant envie de faire avancer le projet plus loin que devant mon ordi,j'ai posté des annonces via AudioFanzine où Eddy a répondu.Il disposait d'un home studio comme moi,ce qui nous as permis de très vite démarrer la démo 2.

2) Quels sont les artistes qui vous ont inspirés pour cet album et qui ont influencé votre style de musique ?

Pour la partie guitare basse chant,je suis très influencé par les groupes comme Autopsy, Suffocation, Undergang, Anatomia etc... Et des groupes un peu moins célèbres mais tout aussi redoutables comme Infester. Je n'ai pas la prétention d'être aussi redoutable mais je m'inspire beaucoup d'eux et de l'atmosphère qui règne dans leurs disques.

3) Comment décririez-vous le son de votre groupe et de votre album ?

Poisseux, anarchique, old-school.

Tout est fait et pensé pour fuir ces sonorités modernes qui ne sont pas dans l'esprit de notre projet.

4) Comment avez-vous choisi le titre de votre album et quelle est son histoire ?

A la base nous n'avions pas du tout d'idée de titres pour cet album. Tous est venus en lisant une biographie de Vlad Tepes et la forêt de pale. Je me suis imaginé la vue, les odeurs et les bruits environnants. ça as tout de suite collé avec l'image de la pochette que j'avais en tête et je trouvais que ça decrivait bien certaines ambiances mises en avant dans les textes de l'album.

5) Comment est-ce que la pochette de l'album a été sélectionnée, et est-ce qu'il y a une histoire derrière ce choix ?

Tout a commencé avec Thasaidon, notre projet annexe à Rotten Brain. Bastien nous a mis en contact avec Mathias pour faire la pochette de la démo. On a tellement accroché avec son style qu'on a décidé de continuer à travailler avec lui sur Rotten Brain. Matthias est une superbe personne qui a le don de faire apparaître vos idées en images! Pour Rotten Brain, on voulait inclure Cthulhu et des empalés. Pour tout le reste,Matthias avait carte blanche.

Je lui donne une ligne directrice et il en fait ce qu'il veut ! Si je fais appel à lui ce n'est pas pour lui dicter à 100% ce qu'il doit faire. Je veux qu'il y ajoute ses émotions,c'est ce qui fait l'artiste!

6) Comment avez-vous travaillé sur la création de cet album ? Quel a été votre processus de création, de l'écriture des chansons à l'enregistrement en studio ?

Je procède toujours de la même manière. En période de composition je me détache complètement de la musique métal et j'écoute bien souvent un peu de classique, de la musique ambiante et du rap. Je n'ai pas appris la musique donc je ne sais pas "ce que je joue". Dans la

théorie,tant que ça vibre dans mon oreille ça me va. Les morceaux de l'album on étés composés il y a plus de deux ans.Donc certains sont peut-être maladroits et d'autres on étés retravaillés, voir carrément oubliés. Tous ces éléments me permettent de me concentrer uniquement sur mon ressenti. En règles générale, je compose seul avec une batterie virtuelle et je fais mes riffs par dessus. Ensuite j'envoi tout à Eddy qui refait toute la partie batterie . Ce qui m'amenne souvent à refaire certaines parties, voir à rajouter certains éléments ou même à en supprimer. On fonctionnent comme ça pour le moment.

L'enregistrement a été assez chaotique pour moi ! Je suis en apprentissage du métier de mixeur, j'ai donc tout fait seul à par la batterie qui a été faite par Eddy. Tout est fait maison, de la prise de son au mastering

7) Quels sont les thèmes que vous explorez dans cet album ? Comment les avez-vous choisis et comment les avez-vous abordés dans vos chansons ?

Tout repose majoritairement sur les émotions. Que ce soit le déni "So Sweet When She Sleep", le désespoir "Forest Of The Thousand Hanged", la rage "Lacerated", "Cut Into Pièces", l'impuissance face à ce que nous ne comprenons pas "The Cursed basement", Madness Hallucination" et l'admiration morbide "A. Slow Agony".

Tous ces morceaux sont influencé par mes lectures du quotidiens et des films que je regarde. Tout est abordé de manières métaphoriques

8) Pouvez-vous nous parler d'une chanson en particulier de cet album et de son processus de création ? Quelle est l'histoire derrière cette chanson et quel message voulez-vous faire passer à travers elle ?

Bien sur ! Madness-Hallucination est un morceau bien plus complexe qu'il en est l'air. Il faut le découper en deux parties. La première partie Madness"débute avec des toms et un nombre incalculable de voix simultanément, c'est là mis en bouche. Puis Hallucination , là où on prend conscience de ce qui ce passe alors que des sons viennent perturber notre spectre sonore.

Ce morceau est un de mes favoris. De d part ça création qui fut très compliquée pour moi. Quand j'ai démarre le morceau il n'y avait qu'un seul riff, les premiers. Il m'a fallu 3 mois non-stop pour trouver une suite , que je trouvais peu convaincante. Eddy a récupéré les pistes guitares et là tout s'est enchainé , éxépté pour le chant. Impossible de faire coller un texte dessus, d'autant plus un texte qui suit le rythme avec les bons mots, la bonne sonorité, un véritable enfer.

C'est seulement en cours de mixage que m'est venue l'idée d'ajouter toutes les pistes chantées ( 61 de mémoire) qui se superposent dans le temps et l'espace! Je n'en pouvais plus de travailler sur cet album et je pense que ce morceau a fait office de catharsis.

9) Quels sont les défis auxquels vous avez été confrontés lors de la création de cet album ? Comment avez-vous surmonté ces obstacles ?

Le manque d'expérience, de préparation et de de connaissances techniques. J'ai voulu me lancer dans la création d'un album sans connaitre l'ampleur de la tâche. J'ai eu la chance d'avoir un mentor en productios et ainsi que des amis musiciens qui m'ont beaucoup soutenus et conseillés tout au long de ce travail. Eddy aussi a été d'une grande aide ! Il ne m'a jamais mis la pression sur les délais. Il m'a laissé gérer ma partie et a su comprendre les moments où j'avais besoin de faire une pause.

10) Comment envisagez-vous les réactions du public à cet album ? Qu'espérez-vous qu'ils ressentent et qu'en attendez-vous ?

Pour ma part, je ne m'attendais pas à grandes choses ! Je fais de la musique par passion et parce-que c'est mon seul exutoire. J'espère néanmoins que certaines personnes vont l'apprécier pour ce qu'il est.

11) Quels sont vos projets futurs pour votre groupe ? Comment envisagez-vous le futur de votre groupe après la sortie de cet album ? Quels sont vos projets et vos ambitions ?

Nous sommes déjà sur la composition d'un deuxième album avec 7 titres écrit entièrement. J'envisage de trouver d'autres musiciens pour continuer l'aventure. Si nous n'en trouvons pas, nous ferons comme nous l'avons toujours fait, à 2. Rotten Brain n'est pas notre seul projet, Eddy joue aussi dans Vice&Rale ( projet que je recommande chaudement! Pour ceux qui Pour ceux qui aiment quand ça groove!). Nous avons en commun Thasaidon dont le premier album est en cours d'enregistrement. Et pour ma part, je suis aussi dans Apokalupsis et Darkness-Prevails. Je ne sais pas comment les choses vont évoluer mais une chose et sure, Rotten Brain'a son dernier mot !!

ROTTEN BRAIN Interview

After a few splits and demos, the duo presents us with their very first album entitled "Wait For Putrefaction". The album, which was released on March 15th, is strongly inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft.

I would also like to sincerely thank the ROTTEN BRAIN band for the time they have dedicated to this interview.

1) Can you tell us about your musical journey leading up to the creation of your first album? How did you meet? How and when did you start playing together?

Hello, thank you for this interview! Eddy is the former drummer of Bestial Soul (thrash metal) and Decaying (brutal death metal), he is no stranger to extreme metal. As for me, it all started with a group of friends. I had already been playing bass for a few years. One day, one of my friends suggested that we start a band and play guitar even though I had never touched one before! We started our first Noise Core project called "Pure" and then Intense Mortification. From there, I started my first project called Irkala which gave birth to my very first recording (a disaster that I am still proud of haha)! A little later, a black metal collective called "Garde Noir" was formed and I served as a guitarist and bassist in Apokalupsis (a project that is still ongoing and whose first album is currently being written). Rotten Brain was truly born in 2018 with a few unreleased compositions and then a demo in 2020. The project was originally a solo project, but realizing that I couldn't program drums and wanting to take the project further than just in front of my computer, I posted ads on AudioFanzine where Eddy responded. He had a home studio like me, which allowed us to quickly start demo 2.

2) Which artists inspired you for this album and influenced your style of music?

For the guitar, bass, and vocals, I am very influenced by bands like Autopsy, Suffocation, Undergang, Anatomia, etc... And also by less famous but equally formidable bands like Infester. I don't claim to be as formidable as them, but I am greatly inspired by them and the atmosphere that reigns in their records.

3) How would you describe the sound of your band and your album?

Grimy, anarchic, old-school.

Everything is done and thought out to avoid modern sounds that are not in the spirit of our project.

4) How did you choose the title of your album and what is its story?

Initially, we had no ideas for titles for this album. Everything came together while reading a biography of Vlad Tepes and the Pale Forest. I imagined the view, the smells, and the surrounding sounds. It immediately matched the image I had in mind for the album cover, and I found that it accurately described certain atmospheres emphasized in the lyrics of the album.

5) How was the album cover selected, and is there a story behind the choice?

It all started with Thasaidon, our side project to Rotten Brain. Bastien put us in touch with Mathias to do the demo cover. We were so impressed with his style that we decided to continue working with him on Rotten Brain. Matthias is a superb person who has the gift of bringing your ideas to life in images! For Rotten Brain, we wanted to include Cthulhu and impaled figures. As for everything else, Matthias had carte blanche.

I give him a guideline, and he does what he wants with it! If I call on him, it is not to dictate 100% of what he should do. I want him to add his emotions, that's what makes the artist!

6) How did you work on the creation of this album? What was your creative process, from writing the songs to recording in the studio?

I always work in the same way. During the composition period, I completely detach myself from metal music and often listen to some classical, ambient, and rap music. I didn't learn music, so I don't know "what I'm playing." In theory, as long as it vibrates in my ear, I'm okay with it. The songs on the album were composed more than two years ago. So some may be clumsy, others have been reworked, or even forgotten. All of these elements allow me to focus solely on my feelings. Generally, I compose alone with a virtual drum kit, and I play my riffs over it. Then I send everything to Eddy, who re-does the entire drum part. This often leads me to redo certain parts, add certain elements, or even remove them. We're working like this at the moment.

The recording was quite chaotic for me! I'm learning the trade of mixing, so I did everything myself except for the drums, which were done by Eddy. Everything is homemade, from sound recording to mastering.

7) What are the themes that you explore in this album? How did you choose them and how did you approach them in your songs?

Everything is mostly based on emotions. Whether it's denial in "So Sweet When She Sleeps", despair in "Forest Of The Thousand Hanged", rage in "Lacerated", "Cut Into Pieces", helplessness in the face of what we don't understand in "The Cursed Basement", madness in "Hallucination" and morbid admiration in "A. Slow Agony".

All these songs are influenced by my daily readings and the movies I watch. Everything is approached in a metaphorical way.

8) Can you tell us about a particular song from this album and its creation process? What is the story behind this song and what message do you want to convey through it?

Of course! "Madness-Hallucination" is a much more complex song than it seems. It should be divided into two parts. The first part "Madness" starts with toms and countless voices simultaneously, that's the introduction. Then "Hallucination", where we become aware of what is happening as sounds come to disturb our sound spectrum.

This song is one of my favorites. First, its creation was very difficult for me. When I started the song, there was only one riff, the first one. It took me 3 months non-stop to find a continuation that I found convincing. Eddy took the guitar tracks and everything went smoothly except for the vocals. It was impossible to fit the lyrics into it, especially lyrics that followed the rhythm with the right words and sound, a real nightmare.

It was only during mixing that I came up with the idea of adding all the vocal tracks (61 if I remember correctly) that overlap in time and space! I couldn't stand working on this album anymore, and I think this song served as a catharsis.

9) What were the challenges you faced in creating this album? How did you overcome these obstacles?

The lack of experience, preparation, and technical knowledge. I wanted to create an album without knowing the magnitude of the task. I was lucky enough to have a mentor in production and musician friends who supported and advised me throughout this work. Eddy was also a great help! He never put pressure on me about deadlines. He let me manage my part and understood when I needed to take a break.

10) What themes do you explore in this album? How did you choose them and how did you approach them in your songs?

Everything mainly revolves around emotions. Whether it's denial in "So Sweet When She Sleeps," despair in "Forest of the Thousand Hanged," rage in "Lacerated," "Cut Into Pieces," powerlessness in the face of what we don't understand in "The Cursed Basement," madness in "Hallucination," or morbid admiration in "A Slow Agony."

All of these pieces are influenced by my daily reading and the movies I watch. Everything is approached in a metaphorical way.

11) What are your future plans for your band? How do you envision the future of your band after the release of this album? What are your plans and ambitions?

We are already working on the composition of a second album with 7 fully written tracks. I plan to find other musicians to continue the adventure. If we don't find any, we'll do as we've always done, just the two of us. Rotten Brain is not our only project, Eddy also plays in Vice&Rale (a project that I highly recommend! For those who like it when it grooves!). We have Thasaidon in common, whose first album is being recorded. As for me, I'm also in Apokalupsis and Darkness-Prevails. I don't know how things will evolve, but one thing is for sure, Rotten Brain has not said its last word!
