The Maledict - "Remembrance"

Remember, it was released in 2021:

After six years of silence, The Maledict is back! The wait was agonizing, but in August 2021, they finally unleashed their second full-length album: REMEMBRANCE. Can you believe it's already been three years since its release? Time flies when you're headbanging, right?

REMEMBRANCE takes listeners on an emotional journey through eight tracks—seven brand-new songs plus one reimagined classic. This album is a deep dive into the bittersweet experience of nostalgia. It’s all in the name, derived from the Greek words nóstos and álgos, symbolizing the painful yearning to return home.

From the sweeping, melodic opener to the chaotic two-part suite, THE MALEDICT, and the revamped POROUS—a longtime live favorite finally getting its spotlight on a full album—REMEMBRANCE captures the essence of growing up. It's about realizing that the innocent joy of childhood often comes at a heavy price. Every parent knows the drill: they willingly sacrifice themselves, facing daily darkness, just so their kids can bask in the light.

Remember DREAD, their debut album? It was all about bottling up pain, lashing out in bursts of anger and fear. But with REMEMBRANCE, it’s different. This time, they embrace the pain, letting it out in haunting melodies and raw, emotional cries. The sound is more melodic, more heartfelt, but don’t be fooled—it’s still as heavy as a sledgehammer.

The creation of REMEMBRANCE was a labor of love, stretching over five years. Most of the work was done between 2019 and 2020, with the band sticking to their DIY ethos. Big shoutout to Chris Rogers for his drum engineering, but everything else? 100% self-produced.

REMEMBRANCE dropped on August 29, 2021, available digitally and on streaming platforms, plus a super limited run CDs. If you were lucky enough to snag a physical copy, you got to enjoy original full-color illustrations and liner notes, all exclusive to their Bandcamp page.

About The Maledict:
Born in the rural landscapes of Victoria, Australia, back in 2012, The Maledict started as a small death metal project between guitarist/vocalist Ian McLean and bassist Stuart McCarthy. Over time, what began as straightforward death metal evolved, blending in gothic, orchestral, and doom influences, creating a unique sound that’s unmistakably theirs.

Their musical identity truly took shape with the release of Dread in 2015. This self-produced debut studio album earned them praise from the indie metal community. After the single Imperilled in 2017, they revisited their roots with Return to Gehenna in 2019, re-recording tracks from their 2013 demo Salvation in Yielding.

Cameron Tilley joined the band in 2020, bringing new dimensions with his keyboards and even filling in on lead guitar for some shows. With REMEMBRANCE, The Maledict pushes their boundaries even further, blending experimental, progressive, and melodic elements into their signature doom-laden death metal sound.
