With “Pale Horse”, Celestial Wizard set the tone for their upcoming album Regenesis (out July 11 via Scarlet Records), and they do so with both grit and ambition. The Denver-based quartet tap into Western folklore and cinematic imagery, blending it with their signature mix of power metal and melodic death ; a pairing that sounds more seamless than it has any right to.
The track opens like a standoff at the end of the world: a dusty, apocalyptic atmosphere, thunder rolling in the background, and guitars that churn like distant hoofbeats. It's a bold, visual start to an album that promises to explore rebirth, identity, and transformation.
Lyrically, “Pale Horse” walks a fine line between myth and metaphor. Frontman Nick Daggers channels the language of the old frontier “Six-gun in my hand… vultures circle on” but ties it to themes of mortality and inevitability. There’s a theatrical flair, but it never slips into parody.
Vocally, Amethyst Noir commands the track with controlled power. Her voice pierces through the chaos with clarity and drama, grounding the song even at its most intense. Kyle Lamar’s direction for the accompanying video complements the mood perfectly, delivering desert visuals that feel more The Road Warrior than The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Musically, Celestial Wizard lean into their influences but bring their own stamp to the table. Fans of early In Flames or Devin Townsend’s Galaktikon will find plenty to enjoy here: There’s melody, there’s weight, and above all, there’s intent. The band doesn’t just aim for big choruses or fast riffs, they aim for impact.
With “Pale Horse,” Celestial Wizard don’t just launch a single: They signal a reinvention. Regenesis may well live up to its name.
