DARAH doesn’t ask for your attention: they rip it out by the roots. Their debut album, Holier Than Thou, drops October 24th via Underground Syndicate, and if you thought Southeast Asia’s death metal scene was just warming up… think again.
Formed back in 2015, this Singaporean quintet has spent a decade sharpening their blades. Hilman Eddie’s vocals sound like a demon trying to file a complaint in triplicate: guttural, pissed, and weirdly articulate. Aidil and Iszzuan’s guitars don’t just riff, they swarm. Shu Kai’s bass? Not just felt, it’s feared. And Islam Falmi behind the kit? The man doesn’t play drums, he conducts artillery barrages.
Sonically, they’re channeling the old gods, Morbid Angel’s chaos, Vader’s precision, Behemoth’s grandeur but they’re not cosplaying. Tracks like “Eternal Descent” feel less like homage and more like hostile takeover. It’s death metal that’s technically tight but never sterile, brutal without being boring. Think early Cannibal Corpse meets Bloodbath’s Swedish swagger, filtered through Singapore’s humid, concrete jungle.
The title Holier Than Thou? Yeah, it’s a middle finger to posers, to gatekeepers, to anyone who thinks extreme metal needs permission to exist. Themes orbit around decay, hypocrisy, and the sweet, sweet futility of it all. No sunshine here. Just sweat, steel, and shattered speakers.
The production’s raw in spots, and one or two transitions feel rushed. But that’s part of the charm. This isn’t a polished product. It’s a declaration. A blood pact. A goddamn statement of intent from a scene too many still ignore.
If you sleep on this, you’re not just missing out: you’re disrespecting the underground.
