INTERVIEW WITH BRUNO / HYPNOS (12.9.2025)
A quarter of a century burning in the darkness. Hypnos, a granite pillar of the Czech death metal scene, celebrates 25 years of sonic carnage with a landmark live album, The Deadcrow (Still burning black). More than just a recorded concert, it's a raw, uncompromising dive into a legacy built on massive riffs and relentless gutturals. Founded by former members of Krabathor, having shared stages with the greats (Morbid Angel, Behemoth, Napalm Death…), and forged by legendary producers (Harris Johns, Børge Finstad), Hypnos has lost none of its rage. An encounter with an immutable beast, ready to emerge from the abyss to deliver its manifesto of hate and metallic purity.
1. Hi, twenty-five years is huge for a death metal band. How would you describe Hypnos’ evolution since your beginnings?
Hi. I would describe that as a constant effort to cross the border of classic old school death metal, maybe with an exception of first 2-3 years of existence. I still would like to create extreme metal music but with an addition of some fresh and unique vibes. Honestly, I must say that we are not as successful with this, since we are still ranked as more or less classical death metal band, but I guess I won´t give up .
2. Why choose to celebrate this anniversary with a live album instead of a new studio record? Was it important to capture the band’s raw energy on stage?
Honestly? I would wish to have a new full-length album instead but yet I did not catch the right mood, time and power to start writing and composing, although I feel stupid about this, I would love to go to studio finally, because our last album is from 2020 year. Our drummer Sataroth is also eager to record new songs and I really do not wanna waste his will and motivation. Yes 2026 must be year of new Hypnos full length album, definitely!
3. The setlist spans your entire career (1999-2024). How did you put it together? Was it difficult to choose the tracks to represent a quarter of a century of music?
Not really, it is more or less our standard set with an addition of couple more rare songs and one new one, prepared for next album (Still Burning Black). We miss a bit that we do not play any song from 3rd album « Rabble Manifesto », but these songs are more complicated and I prefer to invest energy and time in new stuff.
4. Bruno, you are one of the founding members. What is your single greatest memory from these 25 years (on stage or in the studio)?
I am the only founding member now, which does not make me too happy because I prefer more stable line-ups but people change during the time and get different priorities in the meantime. Anyway, we have many great memories, touring with bands as BEHEMOTH, VADER, MORBID ANGEL, AMON AMARTH, NAPALM DEATH, working in the studio with my idols Harris JOHNS, resp. Borge FINSTAD or our first travelling on airplane for a shows (Mennecy Metal Fest in France and Bosphorus Metal fest in Turkiye last year), just to name a few. We did over 500 shows, recorded 6 full length albums, plus my background in Krabathor, where I spent 14 years and which still sends the signs of activity from time to time.
5. After more than 500 shows across Europe, is there one performance that remains unforgettable? Did a tour with a band like Morbid Angel or Behemoth leave a special mark on you?
It is impossible to choose certain event but these tours would be part of that for sure. It is also the lesson coz´ you still have a chance to learn and to improve yourself then. My highlights are still connected with Krabathor, as a farewell tour in 1999 year or Brutal Assault 2014 and subsequent tour, but I still did not give up and I am sure there are still some great impressions waiting for us in a future.
6. The live album comes on CD with a 20-page booklet. What role do these visuals play in the overall experience? Can you tell us more about the visual content and artifacts included?
It is very important part for me because visual impression makes a complex feel, not only audio listening. I always keep an eye on the visuals, image, graphics, merchandise etc. I felt it always the same way and especially last 1-2 decades it has extreme role, because listeners will not be satisfied only with the audio impression. They need more and bands, who can offer this in addition, have as advantage to the others. Since our comeback in 2010 year, we follow more or less black/white concept, which I consider as very aesthetic, if done well. I prefer to be darker and obscure, which does not fit to the new live album, with full coloured layout, but in this case I do not mind. Maybe I welcome that because it differs from our standard production and conception.
7. You worked with producers like Harris Johns and Børge Finstad. How have these experiences influenced your sound? What did you learn from them?
We decided for these sound engineers with aim to get the best sound possible and the truth is that all of their productions sound really good. Into the bargain, again, this is a lesson to have a chance to work with such people. If so many great artists to decided to work with them before us, they are definitely exceptional. I also relied on the fact that it could help us in promotion but actually, that does not work that much last years. Anyway, we are limited with our financial possibilities, we are not paid by label and we must earn money to all expenses by ourselves, therefore I am not sure if we will succeed to work with somene like this in the future again.
8. Death metal has changed a lot since 1999. How do you perceive the evolution of the genre, especially in the Czech Republic and Europe? Has Hypnos found its place more easily today?
Yes, as I noted above, it´s more difficult to please hard the listeners, when death metal came as a new style on the decades turn 80/90, people were hungry for music, they knew every song from every album and there were not as many bands as today. But after 30 years, there is 1 000 000 x more bands than before, easy recording, easy sharing, spreading the music and the fight for listener is much harder than before. Therefore, you must add something that other bands do not have. The greatest examples are for example Gojira or Behemoth these days, they are phenomenal in all aspects.
Concerning Czech Republic, I do not think that situation differs that much from the rest of the world. People do not pay much attention to the bands of the middle and small size and just a few of them can make more significant breakthrough. I mean that most popular band from Czech nowadays is Gutalax – but again – very significant additional value of their visual and show. They hit the target.
9. Several former members and guests (like Pegas or Igorr Hubík) appear on this live album. What do these reunions mean for the band? Was it crucial to reunite different "eras" of Hypnos?
They both were very important. Pegas is founding member who spent over 2 decades in a band and has also short but important Krabathor background. Igorr Hubík helped us during comeback period between 2010-2014 years, recorded comeback album where he wrote 2 great songs, he is a member of known Czech black metallers ROOT. It was the pleasure to welcome them on our anniversary show and include them into our performance and it was definitely interesting moment for all visitors of this concert.
10. Does the title The Deadcrow (still burning black) symbolize something special for Hypnos after 25 years?
Yes, that during the years, Hypnos did not lose the power and will to create extreme metal music, far away from mainstream and sweet bubble gum culture. When the flame burns inside your body, there is still something to tell. We stay the rebels, and we are still burning black....
11. You released the Deathbirth EP in 2023. How does this live record relate to your latest studio output? Where does this EP sit in the band’s evolution?
Actually, this EP was planned more or less as an entry recording for our new drummer Sataroth, to welcome him in the band and check, how the working with him in the studio will be, before we will go to record new full-length album. And therefore, beside the 2 new tracks, we decided to include 3 covers, which are actually covers of ourselves. First song from Hypnos debut album, second is my song I wrote for Krabathor in 1995 year and third is cover from 2nd band of our guitarists Vlasa & Canni. During covid times, they came with an idea to cover songs of Hypnos and their Six Degrees of Separation each other. So, we both did.
12. Bruno, your autobiography Revoltikon sold out quickly. Are you considering a reissue or translation? What connection do you see between your personal life and your music?
Yes, second reissue was published just a few months ago and still selling good. Now it was published under different publisher Metal Gate (first 2 editions by Mystic Production in 2014, resp. 2018 years, total press of 1300 copies), which published also audio book Revoltikon 1 month ago. Both, book and audiobook are in Czech language, but there is English version planned for spring of 2026 year, publisher is just occupied with translations.
This book is actually my life story, from childhood till 2014 year, with main focus on my musical career in Krabathor and Hypnos. Contains over 400 mostly rare pictures and also comments and reviews from press and people close to us. Feedback on this book was really more than positive, what makes me happy. After a couple of another years, I would like to write and publish continuation of this biography, which will be entitled « Heretikon ». I have started writing already.
13. What were the biggest challenges or moments of doubt during these 25 years?
Probably fall of 2005 year. I got divorced, founding member Pegas left the band (for the first time), I was rebuilding old house and had several loans which I had a problem to pay because of my very poor job, which allowed mi to tour with my band but did not cover my life expenses. I had a new girlfriend I wanted to be with and felt burn out after being almost 30 years active touring musician. I needed the rest and find the motivation. I was reconciled I will not be a musician again and that I will become just normal family man. So, I disbanded HYPNOS in January 2006, after short European tour with Centinex & Purgatory. Luckily, music found me again after 3 years, when I got stronger. I contacted Pegas, we started to rehearse, released MCD “Halfway to Hell” and had great comeback show at Brutal Assault festival in 2010 year. It was followed by short tour with Napalm Death and we were back. I am happy about that, music brought me so many great impressions and memories and NEVER EVER disappointed me. Still standing by my side for most of my life. I would die without music.
14. With a lineup that has changed over the years, how do you maintain the band’s sonic identity? The current lineup seems very tight-knit – what is the key to this longevity?
Line-up constancy was always my dream but unfortunately, I was not able to keep same line-up for a longer time period. Over the 2 decades, we were 2 founding members with Pegas still in the band, although he took a few breaks, but he always returned. Anyway, we were not lucky with guitarists, until the last album “The Blackcrow”, we always had different guitarists on each album, although they all were great. But current guitarist Vlasa joined Hypnos in 2010 year and Canni in 2014 year, so they seem to be stable now. Unfortunately, Pegas decided to leave the band in 2022 year, so Sataroth joined and it was definitely good decision. He is younger than us, very unassuming and eager for music. I am so looking forward to write new songs with him and record in the studio. I really can´t wait for new material and next album!
15. Czech death metal has its own personality. What sets Hypnos apart from the international scene?
Man, I have no idea. I do not even think we differ from the other death metal bands internationally.
16. What message or emotion do you wish to convey to fans with this anniversary live?
As I said. That we are still here, and still burning with black flame…..
17. As a band with such a long career, how do you manage the pressure to remain relevant and intense? What still motivates Hypnos to get on stage after all these years?
I don´t wanna be pathetic, but I would definitely say that it is the flame inside our bodies. We love metal music and music in general.
18. Do you have any untold tour or studio anecdotes you’d like to share for this anniversary?
Not really….
19. What is your vision for the coming years? New albums, an anniversary tour, or side projects?
Actually, I never wanted to split my powers for other projects than my main band, therefore I always played just in 1 band, Krabathor or Hypnos. The truth is that nowadays, I am member of both but Krabathor is mostly not active now. Our guitarists Vlasa & Canni still have their original band Six Degrees of Separation, where I found them both years ago and headhunted them also for Hypnos.
Concerning Hypnos, our main goal now is to compose, record and release new full-length album in 2026. Then to have effective promo campaign to support our band, to have some gigs, tour and festivals that could push us forward. The part of this mosaic is also this interview you do with me now and I thank you for this, it is really appreciated.
20. Finally, if you had to summarize these 25 years in three words, what would they be?
A lot of pleasant work that made happy not only us in the band but also many of our fans and followers. We hope we put our little stone in the mosaic of metal music and that this little stone will make any sense in the whole picture. Thanks to all who help us to reach our goals!

The Deadcrow (still burning black) is not a farewell, but a statement of permanence. Hypnos, through the years, lineup changes, and shifts in the scene, has remained faithful to a raw and direct vision of death metal. This live album is a powerful testament to a well-earned longevity, that of a band that never compromised its art and continues to burn, black and intense, for its faithful. Long live the crow.

Un quart de siècle à brûler dans les ténèbres. Hypnos, pilier granitique du death metal tchèque, célèbre ses 25 années de carnage sonore avec un album live événement, The Deadcrow (still burning black). Plus qu’un simple concert enregistré, c’est une plongée brute et sans compromis dans un héritage construit à coups de riffs massifs et de gutturaux implacables. Fondé par d’anciens membres de Krabathor, ayant partagé les scènes avec les plus grands (Morbid Angel, Behemoth, Napalm Death…), et forgé par des producteurs légendaires (Harris Johns, Børge Finstad), Hypnos n’a rien perdu de sa rage. Rencontre avec une bête immuable, prête à ressortir des abîmes pour asséner son manifeste de haine et de pureté métallique.
1 – Vingt-cinq ans, c’est énorme pour un groupe de death metal. Comment décrirais-tu l’évolution d’Hypnos depuis vos débuts ?
Franchement ? C’est une lutte constante pour repousser les frontières du death old school, à part peut-être les deux-trois premières années où on collait à ce schéma. J’ai toujours envie de créer du metal extrême, mais en y injectant des vibes fraîches, uniques. Honnêtement, on n’a pas toujours réussi à casser cette étiquette, on reste catalogués comme un groupe de death assez classique… mais je lâcherai pas l’affaire.
2 – Pourquoi fêter cet anniversaire avec un album live plutôt qu’un nouvel opus studio ? C’était important de capter cette énergie brute sur scène ?
Si tu veux la vérité : j’aurais préféré sortir un nouvel album, mais je n’ai pas encore trouvé le bon état d’esprit, le temps et l’énergie pour écrire. Je me sens con d’ailleurs, parce que le dernier disque date de 2020. Notre batteur Sataroth crève d’envie d’enregistrer, et je veux pas gâcher sa motivation. 2026 doit absolument être l’année du prochain Hypnos, ça c’est sûr !
3 – La setlist balaie toute votre carrière (1999-2024). Comment l’avez-vous construite ? Pas trop galère de résumer un quart de siècle en quelques titres ?
Pas vraiment. On a repris notre set classique, en y ajoutant quelques raretés et un nouveau morceau, prévu pour le prochain album (Still Burning Black). On regrette juste un peu de ne pas jouer de titres de notre 3e album Rabble Manifesto, mais ces morceaux sont plus complexes et je préfère investir notre énergie dans du neuf.
4 – Bruno, tu es l’un des membres fondateurs. Quel est ton souvenir le plus fort de ces 25 ans ?
Je suis même le dernier membre fondateur encore là… et c’est pas une grande joie, j’aurais préféré une line-up plus stable. Mais les gens changent, les priorités aussi. On a quand même accumulé une tonne de souvenirs : tourner avec BEHEMOTH, VADER, MORBID ANGEL, AMON AMARTH, NAPALM DEATH, bosser en studio avec mes idoles Harris JOHNS et Børge FINSTAD, prendre l’avion pour la première fois pour jouer en France (Mennecy Metal Fest) ou en Turquie (Bosphorus Metal Fest)… Et puis voilà, plus de 500 concerts, 6 albums, et sans oublier mes 14 ans avec Krabathor. Pas mal comme bagage.
5 – Après plus de 500 concerts, y en a-t-il un qui reste gravé ? Et les tournées avec Morbid Angel ou Behemoth, ça marque ?
Impossible de choisir un seul moment, mais ces tournées-là en font clairement partie. Et puis chaque tournée, c’est une leçon : tu apprends encore, tu t’améliores. Perso, mes plus gros souvenirs restent liés à Krabathor : la tournée d’adieu en 1999, Brutal Assault 2014 et ce qui a suivi. Mais j’ai pas dit mon dernier mot, je suis sûr que d’autres gros moments nous attendent.
6 – L’album live sort en CD avec un livret de 20 pages. Quelle importance accordes-tu à l’aspect visuel ? Tu peux nous en dire plus sur le contenu et les artefacts inclus ?
B. Pour moi c’est ultra important. Le visuel complète l’expérience, ça ne doit pas être juste une écoute audio. J’ai toujours fait gaffe à l’image, au graphisme, au merch… depuis le début. Et aujourd’hui, encore plus qu’avant, les fans veulent du concret, pas juste de la musique. Les groupes qui offrent un univers visuel en plus ont clairement un avantage.
Depuis notre retour en 2010, on suit un concept plutôt noir & blanc, que je trouve très esthétique quand c’est bien foutu. Mais pour ce live, on a choisi une mise en page en couleurs, et ça ne me dérange pas. Au contraire : ça change et ça colle bien à l’événement.
7 – Vous avez bossé avec des producteurs légendaires comme Harris Johns et Børge Finstad. Qu’est-ce que ça vous a apporté ?
B. On a choisi ces ingés son pour choper le meilleur son possible, et c’est clair que leurs prods sonnent de ouf. Travailler avec eux, c’est une leçon à chaque fois. Quand tu vois le nombre de grands artistes qui les ont choisis avant nous, tu sais qu’ils sont exceptionnels.
J’espérais aussi que ça aide en promo, mais ces dernières années ça marche moins. Et puis on a nos limites : on n’a pas de label qui nous paye, on doit tout financer nous-mêmes. Pas sûr qu’on puisse retravailler avec des pointures comme eux à l’avenir.
8 – Le death metal a beaucoup évolué depuis 1999. Comment vois-tu cette évolution, en Europe et en Tchéquie ? Hypnos a-t-il trouvé plus facilement sa place aujourd’hui ?
B. Franchement, c’est plus dur qu’avant. À la fin des 80s/début 90s, le death était nouveau, les fans dévoraient tout, ils connaissaient chaque morceau de chaque album. Aujourd’hui, il y a 1 000 000 de groupes de plus, l’enregistrement est facile, la diffusion aussi, et la bataille pour capter l’auditeur est féroce. Il faut apporter quelque chose de différent, comme Gojira ou Behemoth qui explosent tout.
En Tchéquie, c’est pareil qu’ailleurs : les petits et moyens groupes galèrent, seuls quelques-uns percent vraiment. Le meilleur exemple, c’est Gutalax : leur côté visuel et scénique les propulse au-dessus de la masse.
9 – On retrouve d’anciens membres et invités (comme Pegas ou Igorr Hubík) sur ce live. Que représentent ces retrouvailles pour Hypnos ?
B. Énorme. Pegas, c’est un membre fondateur, il a passé plus de 20 ans dans Hypnos et il a aussi un passé chez Krabathor. Quant à Igorr Hubík, il nous a aidés au moment du comeback entre 2010 et 2014, il a composé deux super morceaux sur l’album de retour, et il est aussi membre des légendaires black metalleux de ROOT. Les avoir sur scène pour notre concert anniversaire, c’était un vrai kif et un moment spécial pour tout le public.
10 – Le titre The Deadcrow (Still Burning Black) symbolise quelque chose de particulier après 25 ans ?
B. Ouais. Ça veut dire qu’après toutes ces années, Hypnos n’a rien perdu de sa puissance ni de sa volonté de créer du metal extrême, loin du mainstream et de la culture bubblegum. Quand la flamme brûle en toi, t’as encore des choses à dire. On reste des rebelles, et on brûle toujours noir…
11 – Vous avez sorti l’EP Deathbirth en 2023. Comment ce live se relie-t-il à vos dernières compositions studio ?
B. Cet EP, c’était un peu notre test pour notre nouveau batteur Sataroth : l’accueillir dans le groupe et voir comment il se débrouille en studio avant d’attaquer un full-length. On y a mis 2 nouveaux morceaux et 3 reprises… mais en fait, ce sont des covers de nous-mêmes. Une chanson du premier album Hypnos, une que j’avais écrite pour Krabathor en 1995, et une du deuxième groupe de nos guitaristes Vlasa & Canni. Pendant le Covid, ils ont eu l’idée de se faire mutuellement des covers de Hypnos et de Six Degrees of Separation… et voilà le résultat.
12 – Bruno, ton autobiographie Revoltikon s’est vendue rapidement. Une réédition ou traduction est-elle prévue ? Quel lien vois-tu entre ta vie perso et ta musique ?
B. Oui, la deuxième réédition est sortie il y a quelques mois et se vend toujours bien. Cette fois, c’est Metal Gate qui publie, après Mystic Production pour les deux premières éditions (2014 et 2018). On a aussi sorti l’audiobook il y a un mois. Le livre raconte ma vie de l’enfance jusqu’en 2014, avec un focus sur ma carrière dans Krabathor et Hypnos, plus de 400 photos rares et des commentaires de la presse et de proches. La version anglaise est prévue pour le printemps 2026.
Et je prévois déjà la suite : Heretikon. J’ai commencé à écrire.
13 – Quels ont été les plus grands défis ou moments de doute pendant ces 25 ans ?
B. Le plus dur, c’était probablement 2005. Divorce, départ de Pegas, construction d’une maison, plusieurs crédits à rembourser avec un job pourri qui me laissait juste de quoi tourner avec le groupe. Nouveau couple, burn-out après presque 30 ans de tournée… J’ai mis Hypnos en pause en janvier 2006. Heureusement, la musique m’a retrouvé 3 ans plus tard : Pegas est revenu, on a répété, sorti l’MCD Halfway to Hell, et fait un comeback monstrueux au Brutal Assault 2010. La musique ne m’a jamais déçu. Jamais.
14 – Avec des line-ups qui ont changé au fil du temps, comment gardez-vous l’identité sonore du groupe ?
B. Maintenir le même line-up longtemps, c’était mon rêve… mais c’est dur. Pendant 20 ans, on a eu Pegas et moi, avec quelques pauses pour lui, et des guitaristes différents à chaque album jusqu’au dernier, The Blackcrow. Aujourd’hui, Vlasa est là depuis 2010 et Canni depuis 2014, ça tient. Sataroth a rejoint en 2022, et c’est parfait : jeune, humble et super motivé. J’ai trop hâte d’écrire et d’enregistrer avec lui. Nouvel album en vue !
15 – Le death metal tchèque a sa propre personnalité. Qu’est-ce qui distingue Hypnos de la scène internationale ?
B. Franchement, aucune idée. Je pense pas qu’on se démarque vraiment des autres groupes de death metal à l’international. On fait juste ce qu’on aime, et on le fait avec rage.
16 – Quel message ou quelle émotion voulez-vous transmettre aux fans avec ce live anniversaire ?
B. Comme je l’ai dit : on est toujours là, et on brûle toujours d’une flamme noire… On veut que les fans ressentent cette rage et cette passion intactes après 25 ans.
17 – Avec une carrière aussi longue, comment gérez-vous la pression pour rester pertinents et intenses ? Qu’est-ce qui motive encore Hypnos à monter sur scène après tout ce temps ?
B. Pas envie d’être pathétique, mais la motivation, c’est cette flamme intérieure. On aime le metal, on aime la musique tout court. Ça brûle en nous, et c’est ce qui nous pousse encore à tout donner sur scène.
18 – Vous avez des anecdotes inédites de tournée ou de studio à partager pour cet anniversaire ?
B. Pas vraiment…
19 – Quelle est votre vision pour les prochaines années ? Nouveaux albums, tournée anniversaire ou projets parallèles ?
B. Je n’ai jamais voulu disperser mon énergie sur d’autres projets que mon groupe principal. Aujourd’hui, Krabathor est surtout inactif, donc Hypnos est notre priorité. Objectif : composer, enregistrer et sortir un nouvel album full-length en 2026, puis assurer promo, concerts et festivals pour propulser le groupe. Cette interview fait aussi partie de cette mosaïque, et je vous remercie pour ça.
20 – Enfin, si tu devais résumer ces 25 ans en trois mots ?
B. Beaucoup de taf intense et de plaisir, qui nous a rendus heureux, nous et nos fans. On espère avoir posé notre pierre dans le monument qu’est le metal, et que cette pierre ait du sens dans l’ensemble. Merci à tous ceux qui nous aident à continuer ce chemin !

The Deadcrow (still burning black) n’est pas un adieu, mais une déclaration de permanence. Hypnos, à travers les années, les changements de line-up et les évolutions de la scène, est resté fidèle à une vision brute et directe du death metal. Cet album live est le témoignage puissant d’une longévité méritée, celle d’un groupe qui n’a jamais transigé avec son art et qui continue de brûler, noir et intense, pour ses fidèles. Longue vie au corbeau.
