Lethernal Utopia - Illusion of Time: Toulouse’s Melodic Metalcore Gambit

When a band names themselves Lethernal Utopia, you half-expect either cringe-worthy grandiosity or a refreshing lack of self-awareness. Thankfully, these Toulouse upstarts land closer to the latter: melodic metalcore with the hooks of the ‘90s/2000s heyday, but none of the over-polished sterility that plagues the genre today.

Their debut single, "Live to Die", already proved they could balance soaring choruses with genuine bite, no small feat in a scene drowning in autotuned screams and algorithm-chasing riffs. Now, their first full-length, Illusion of Time (out September 5th via M&O Music), doubles down: melodies that stick like barbed wire, rhythms that hit harder than they should, and a dark, introspective edge that keeps it from sounding like just another revamp of Ascendancy-era Trivium.

What sets them apart? The songwriting. These aren’t streamer-bait tracks, they’ve got structure, dynamics, and a knack for making breakdowns feel earned rather than obligatory. The dual-guitar harmonies (yes, they still exist) nod to In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, while the modern production (thankfully not brickwalled to oblivion) gives it a crisp, urgent punch. And live? Early footage suggests they bring the energy without the cringe, no small victory.

Melodic metalcore often feels like a museum exhibit, Illusion of Time actually sounds alive. And right now, that’s more than enough.
