YDHESSÄ - "Genesis": When Pagan Folk Meets the Crossroads of Europe

Five musicians, two countries, and a sound that refuses to pick a lane. Ydhessä, that’s Finnish for "together", because of course it is, are a Franco-Belgian collective stitching together pagan folk, Celtic melodies, mystic chants, and just enough rock punch to keep things from drifting into Renaissance Faire territory.

Founded in 2023 by Gaëtan Courouble, they dropped their first single, "Triskelion", like a gauntlet, a declaration of intent. Now, their debut album, Genesis (out since May 2024), delivers on that promise: nine tracks of wandering, weaving folk-metal that feels less like a genre exercise and more like a campfire session gone electric.

What’s striking? The balance. One minute you’re lost in whispered Gaelic-tinged harmonies, the next you’re swaying to a groove that’s all folk warmth and subtle rock pulse, like a sunlit glade where the wind hums in time. No aggression, no forced heaviness: just organic, breathing music that lets the melodies unfold naturally.

It’s Eluveitie’s earthy charm meeting Wardruna’s meditative pull, but with a lightness of touch that avoids the usual ‘epic’ posturing. Tracks like "Triskelion" and "Dying on the Sea" reveal a band still refining their craft—yet already crafting something quietly hypnotic.

Some transitions feel a bit too polite, like they’re tiptoeing around the rawness this kind of music demands. But that’s also part of the charm: Genesis doesn’t bludgeon you with authenticity; it invites you in.

If you’ve ever wanted to headbang in a forest, this is your soundtrack. Just watch out for the dryads.
