"Christus Venari": When Death Metal Gets Gothic (And It's Glorious)

Watch the Video

Okay, let’s cut to the chase, Christus Venari is Infernal Thorns throwing down the gauntlet. This isn’t just another death metal album; it's like they took the frenetic chaos of early Deicide, the gothic grandeur of mid-2000s Behemoth, and then… well, that's the thing: twisted it into something that's both brutally tight and weirdly fluid. The Chilean scene's known for its intensity, but these guys? They're digging deeper, carving out moments of dark drama with swirling guitar leads and black-metal melodicism that really shouldn't work as well as it does. And those slam breakdowns? Yeah, they're here, and against all odds, they fit.

The mix is a beast: Seba Puente's production packs the guitars and rhythms into this thick, muscular wall of sound, but then, here's the kicker, it opens up just enough to let the madness breathe. One second you're drowning in blast-beats, the next you're floating in this eerie, almost hypnotic space where a single chord hangs like a threat. The vocals? A guttural monster one minute, a snarling mid-range attack the next. It's chaotic, sure, but it's controlled chaos. Like watching a storm cell from the inside: terrifying, but you can't look away, even if you should maybe..

And that's the magic of Christus Venari: it's episodic, almost cinematic. Songs like "Death Chants" hit you like a freight train, but then you've got "Profane the Mass" creeping in slow and evil before it explodes in your face. "Illuminated by the Flames", eight minutes of riff overload and meter shifts, proves they can stretch out without losing an ounce of intensity. Is it groundbreaking? Maybe not. But damn, the sheer skill here, the way they juggle all these styles without dropping the ball, is something else.

Give Christus Venari a spin, if you dare (seriously, your neck will thank/hate you). And if you're into metal that's as smart as it is savage, this one's worth your time. Just don't blame me if you end up with whiplash.

"Infernal Thorns' 'Christus Venari' is a powerful and dynamic entry into the extreme metal scene. It successfully blends death metal brutality with gothic and black metal elements, creating a dense and atmospheric sound. The album's strength lies in its ability to balance chaos with control, delivering both crushing intensity and moments of dark, melodic beauty. It's a compelling and skillfully executed work."
