Basque black metal from a project born in 2022 and already sounding this… focused? ASCHEN just dropped “The Last Glow” and it’s not just another frostbitten riff parade. It’s colder than that. And sadder. And angrier in a quiet way.

Black metal basque d'un projet né en 2022 et déjà aussi… concentré ? ASCHEN balance « The Last Glow » et c’est pas juste une parade de riffs gelés. C’est plus froid que ça. Plus triste. Et plus en colère, mais d’une colère silencieuse.

The concept alone hooked me. A world after the sun’s death. Humanity feeding a single flame that slowly eats everything. Everything. Until there’s nothing left but the self. That flame as human dissatisfaction? Damn. That’s bleak. I love it.

Le concept m’a accroché direct. Un monde après la mort du soleil. L’humanité qui nourrit une unique flamme qui dévore tout lentement. Tout. Jusqu’à ce qu’il ne reste que le soi. Cette flamme comme incarnation de l’insatisfaction humaine ? Putain. C’est sinistre. J’adore.

Musically, it hits that sweet spot between classic black metal venom and something more expansive. You get the icy tremolo lines, sure. You get the blast beats, sharp, technical, almost surgical. But there’s doom in there too, this heavy dragging atmosphere that makes the whole thing feel like it’s collapsing inward. Not just aggression. Weight.

Musicalement, ça tape pile dans le sweet spot entre venin black metal classique et quelque chose de plus expansif. Tremolos glacés, oui. Blasts nets, techniques, presque chirurgicaux. Mais y a du doom dedans, cette atmosphère lourde qui traîne et fait tout s’effondrer vers l’intérieur. Pas juste de l’agressivité. Du poids.

Mikel Telletxea started this as a solo vision, vocals, guitar, programming, and now with Atauzz on bass it feels bigger, more grounded. Recorded at Atala Studios, mastered by Toni Lindgren at Fascination Street… yeah, that name. You can hear it. It’s raw but not messy, massive but not plastic.

Mikel Telletxea a lancé ça comme une vision solo : chant, guitare, programmation. Maintenant avec Atauzz à la basse, ça sonne plus grand, plus ancré. Enregistré à Atala Studios, masterisé par Toni Lindgren chez Fascination Street… ouais, ce nom. Ça s’entend. Cru mais pas bordélique, massif mais pas plastifié.

And the bilingual angle, English and Basque, gives it identity. This isn’t copy-paste Scandinavian worship. It’s personal. Psychological fracture, environmental decay… it’s all there, but without preaching. Just atmosphere and tension and that slow-burning unease. “The Last Glow” isn’t flashy. It lingers. Like embers in the dark.

Et l’angle bilingue, anglais et basque, lui donne une vraie identité. C’est pas du copier-coller scandinave. C’est personnel. Fracture psychologique, délabrement environnemental… tout y est, sans sermonner. Juste atmosphère, tension et ce malaise qui couve lentement. « The Last Glow » c’est pas flashy. Ça s’attarde. Comme des braises dans le noir.
