Some bands are born from a plan. Others from necessity. Volturian? Pure instinct. At the core of it all stands Federico Mondelli, yes, that Federico from Frozen Crown. A relentless songwriter who once admitted he enjoys writing songs even more than playing an instrument. And when you start stacking up tracks that don’t quite fit your main band’s identity… well, you build a new kingdom. Darker. Sleeker. More cinematic.

Certaines bandes naissent d’un plan. D’autres par nécessité. Volturian ? Pur instinct. Au cœur de tout ça, Federico Mondelli, ouais, celui de Frozen Crown. Un songwriter infatigable qui a avoué préférer écrire des chansons que jouer d’un instrument. Et quand tu accumules des titres qui collent pas à l’identité de ton groupe principal… bah tu construis un nouveau royaume. Plus sombre. Plus sleek. Plus cinématographique.

Enter Federica Lanna of Sleeping Romance. The two met at the Milady Metal Fest in Mantua, and something clicked instantly. Mondelli didn’t just write songs ; he crafted them specifically around Federica’s voice, her tone, her personality. Volturian wasn’t just another side project. It was tailored fire.

In 2021, Crimson arrived. A debut that dared to blend 90s pop sensibilities with modern heavy metal muscle. Think Underworld, Blade, Van Helsing: gothic aesthetics, nocturnal vibes, shimmering synths colliding with razor-edged riffs. It’s seductive, dramatic, and unapologetically melodic. Frozen Crown’s Giada Etro makes a guest appearance on “In A Heartbeat,” creating a striking vocal contrast with Federica. The album closes with a surprising yet emotional cover of Roxette’s “Fading Like a Flower,” recorded as a tribute to the late Marie Fredriksson. A bold move, and it works.

En 2021, Crimson débarque. Un premier album qui ose mixer sensibilités pop 90’s avec du heavy metal musclé moderne. Pense Underworld, Blade, Van Helsing : esthétique gothique, vibes nocturnes, synthés scintillants qui clashent avec des riffs tranchants comme des rasoirs. C’est séduisant, dramatique, et sans excuses mélodique. Giada Etro de Frozen Crown guest sur « In A Heartbeat », contraste vocal saisissant avec Federica. L’album finit sur une cover surprenante mais émouvante de « Fading Like a Flower » de Roxette, hommage à la regrettée Marie Fredriksson. Audacieux, et ça marche.

The pandemic lockdown in Italy forced creativity into isolation. For the “Broken” video, each member filmed their own parts at home ; Federica even shot scenes in her attic with its black walls. Raw, intimate, real. When restrictions lifted, “Haunting Symphony” finally breathed outdoor air. Crimson was also released on vinyl, celebrated with an acoustic version of “Days Before You Died.” Style matters.

Le confinement pandémie en Italie force la créativité en isolement. Pour le clip « Broken », chaque membre filme ses parties chez soi ; Federica tourne même dans son grenier aux murs noirs. Brut, intime, vrai. Quand les restrictions tombent, « Haunting Symphony » respire enfin l’air libre. Crimson sort aussi en vinyle, fêté avec une version acoustique de « Days Before You Died ». Le style compte.

Then came Red Dragon in 2022. The title nods to the famous novel, while the lyrics dive into darker psychological territories inspired by graphic legends like Alan Moore and Frank Miller. More intense. More visual. Almost comic-book noir in spirit. Live, the band sharpened its claws. A show at Milan’s Legend Club alongside Infected Rain. Opening for Frozen Crown in 2023. A powerful moment when Federica joined Giada Etro on stage for “Angels in Disguise,” followed by a massive collective encore on Helloween’s “I Want Out,” with members of Nocturna joining in. That’s metal brotherhood, and sisterhood, done right.

Puis Red Dragon en 2022. Le titre cligne vers le roman célèbre, les lyrics plongent dans des territoires psychologiques plus sombres, inspirés par les légendes du graphic novel comme Alan Moore et Frank Miller. Plus intense. Plus visuel. Presque noir comic-book dans l’esprit. Live, le groupe aiguise ses griffes. Show au Legend Club de Milan avec Infected Rain. Première partie de Frozen Crown en 2023. Moment puissant quand Federica rejoint Giada Etro sur scène pour « Angels in Disguise », suivi d’un énorme rappel collectif sur « I Want Out » de Helloween, avec des membres de Nocturna. Ça c’est la fraternité et sororité metal, bien faite.

With Massimiliano Rossi on bass and Andrea Zannin on drums (following early drummer Alberto Mezzanotte), Volturian has solidified its lineup and identity. They closed 2024 by appearing at the 2025 edition of the Milady Metal Fest, returning to where it all began. Volturian is velvet and steel. Pop hooks wrapped in gothic shadows. A project born from songwriting passion, now standing tall as a band with its own blood-red signature. And honestly? It hits. Hard.

Avec Massimiliano Rossi à la basse et Andrea Zannin à la batterie (après le batteur initial Alberto Mezzanotte), Volturian solidifie line-up et identité. Ils bouclent 2024 au Milady Metal Fest 2025, retour aux sources. Volturian c’est velours et acier. Hooks pop emballés dans des ombres gothiques. Un projet né de la passion d’écriture, maintenant debout comme un vrai groupe avec sa signature rouge sang. Et franchement ? Ça tape. Fort.
