BIRTH OF A MASK. PROG WITH SCARS.

Athens. Progressive metal. And not the polite, clean prog you put on while doing the dishes. No. HYPOSTASIS are back from a hiatus and they’re not easing into it. Their debut full-length “Birth of a Mask” drops early May 2026 and it feels like years of frustration, doubt, obsession poured into one long exhale.

Athènes. Progressive metal. Et pas le prog poli et propre que tu mets en fond pour faire la vaisselle. Non. HYPOSTASIS reviennent d’une pause et ils y vont pas mollo. Leur premier vrai album « Birth of a Mask » sort début mai 2026 et ça sent les années de frustration, de doutes, d’obsession qui explosent en un long souffle.

First EP was back in 2016, self-produced, sharp riffs, fluid melodies, proper chops. Then silence. Writing. Rewriting. Living, I guess. And now this.

Le premier EP date de 2016, autoproduit, riffs tranchants, mélodies fluides, vrai niveau technique. Puis le silence. Écriture. Réécriture. Vie, j’imagine. Et maintenant ça.

This album is a concept, yeah, but not the cheesy space-king stuff. It’s deep inside a scarred human soul. Self-reflection, doubt, hope, despair... all tangled together. Internal voices, blurred perception, that constant fight between who you are and who you pretend to be. The mask. You get it. Musically? Think Pain of Salvation’s emotional weight, Symphony X’s precision, a bit of Communic’s dramatic punch. But they don’t copy. They twist structures, break patterns, then suddenly hit you with a hook that sticks. “Remains of Me” and “The Craving”, ok that chorus, it lingers. And the title track? Massive. Layers on layers, vocals shifting from fragile to commanding in seconds.

C’est un concept-album, ouais, mais pas le truc kitsch de rois de l’espace. C’est plongé dans l’âme humaine scarifiée. Auto-réflexion, doute, espoir, désespoir… tout emmêlé. Voix intérieures, perception brouillée, ce combat incessant entre qui tu es et qui tu fais semblant d’être. Le masque. Tu piges. Musicalement ? Pense au poids émotionnel de Pain of Salvation, à la précision de Symphony X, un peu du punch dramatique de Communic. Mais ils copient pas. Ils tordent les structures, cassent les patterns, puis te balancent un hook qui reste collé. « Remains of Me » et « The Craving », ok ce refrain, il hante. Et le titre éponyme ? Massif. Couches sur couches, chant qui passe de fragile à autoritaire en quelques secondes.

Romanos Alexander carries a lot on his shoulders vocally, but the whole band is locked in. Guitars sharp but not sterile. Konrad handling bass AND production, respect. Drums dynamic, not just technical for the sake of it (thank you). Mastered by George Neratzis so yeah, it breathes but still punches.

Romanos Alexander porte beaucoup sur ses épaules au chant, mais tout le groupe est soudé. Guitares tranchantes mais pas stériles. Konrad gère basse ET prod, respect. Batterie dynamique, pas juste technique pour la technique (merci). Masterisé par George Neratzis donc ouais, ça respire mais ça cogne toujours.

Ten tracks. “Departure” to “Phoenix”. That last one feels like rebirth but not the shiny kind. More like crawling out of the fire still bleeding. I’m tired, maybe I’m projecting. Maybe not. They’re back on stage too, showing their “new face”. I’d be curious to see how this translates live. Could be intense. Could be transcendent.

Dix titres. De « Departure » à « Phoenix ». Le dernier sonne comme une renaissance mais pas la version brillante. Plutôt ramper hors du feu encore en sang. Je suis fatigué, peut-être que je projette. Peut-être pas. Ils reviennent sur scène aussi, avec leur « nouveau visage ». J’suis curieux de voir comment ça passe live. Ça peut être intense. Ça peut être transcendant.
