New Release: SÖNUS
"Pagan Woman" Hits Like a Ritual You Didn't Know You Needed
You're three minutes in and the riff just refuses to let go. It's thick, blues-soaked, the kind of heaviness that doesn't need to scream because it already owns the room. Drums hit like a heartbeat that's forgotten how to be gentle. Vocals come in raw, commanding, pulling you into something that feels less like a song and more like an invocation. That's SÖNUS. They just dropped "Pagan Woman", the opening statement from their album "Planes of Torment" coming February 14th, and it's the kind of single that reminds you why classic hard rock mattered in the first place. Not as nostalgia. As presence.
David Wachsman's been building this for years (his 2022 doom project "Usurper of the Universe" was topping charts), but this version is different. Full lineup now : Dave Reno on bass, Colin Jaramillo on drums, Mike Gorman handling rhythm guitar. Recorded live at Reed's Recordings in Campbell, mixed by Reno at Fuzzy Wizard, mastered by Matt "Mojo" Denton. No studio tricks. No safety net.
The concept sits somewhere between heartbreak ceremony and obsessive ritual. "Pagan Woman" isn't about love, it's about love destroying you and calling it transformation. Decay becomes renewal. Longing becomes power. The track moves like a pilgrimage through loss, sensual in the worst way, hypnotic in a way that makes you uncomfortable because you feel it. Musically it's anchored in something real : Led Zeppelin's towering weight, The Cult's ritualistic intensity, Uriah Heep's prog-tinged heaviness, Mountain's raw brutality. But Wachsman isn't copying anyone ; he's channeling that energy, that refusal to be polished or safe. The riffs are massive but never gratuitous. The rhythms are ritualistic but never precious. Vocals hit with the urgency of someone who's already lost too much. "Planes of Torment" is apparently a full descent : madness, heartbreak, survival, all recorded live to keep that untamed intensity intact. "Pagan Woman" is just the beginning, the door opening to something heavier and more honest than most bands have the guts to attempt.
This is rock that means something again. February 14. The pilgrimage starts now.
