The Wooden Pearls - "Against The Tide" Is What Happens When You Stop Playing It Safe

Ok listen, I'm gonna be honest right from the start : this isn't metal. It's rock, proper rock, the kind that reminds you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place before everything got so... predictable. The Wooden Pearls just announced their second album dropping March 27th on M&O Music, and honestly, it's the kind of record that makes you want to crank the car speakers even though nobody makes CD players anymore.

Ok écoute, je vais être honnête dès le départ : c’est pas du metal. C’est du rock, du vrai rock, celui qui te rappelle pourquoi t’es tombé amoureux du genre au début avant que tout devienne si… prévisible. The Wooden Pearls annoncent leur deuxième album qui sort le 27 mars chez M&O Music, et franchement, c’est le genre de disque qui te donne envie de pousser les enceintes de la voiture même si plus personne n’a de lecteur CD.

Three people. Céline Moreau on vocals and bass (yeah, she's doing both and killing it), Stéphane Puyou on guitar and backing vocals, Gilles Puyou on drums and more backing vocals. They're taking that late-90s legacy thing, PJ Harvey, Nada Surf territory, but they're not doing a retro-cosplay situation. This is something fresher, angrier, more honest. Think The Last Dinner Party's lyrical bite mixed with Bastille's production sensibility, but filtered through this trio's own weird, brilliant universe.

Trois personnes. Céline Moreau au chant et à la basse (ouais, elle gère les deux et elle tue), Stéphane Puyou à la guitare et backing vocals, Gilles Puyou à la batterie et plus de backing. Ils prennent cet héritage fin 90’s, territoire PJ Harvey, Nada Surf, mais c’est pas du cosplay rétro. C’est plus frais, plus en colère, plus honnête. Pense à la morsure lyrique de The Last Dinner Party mélangée à la sensibilité prod de Bastille, mais filtré à travers l’univers bizarre et brillant de ce trio.

The concept's pretty heavy actually : it's about life forcing you down Plan B, Plan C, Plan D when Plan A doesn't work out. A lockdown that makes you docile while your heart screams to break the mold. Years of learning to be perfect when everything inside you's rebelling. Relationships that crash and burn. And through it all, this driving sensation of being against the current, watching life blur past the windows while you're stuck in the backseat. "Against The Tide", recorded at Studio La Colline down in Tarn, mixed by Philippe Faraud (LUKE, Catleya, Hi Cowboy), mastered by Raphaël Jonin, sounds like a band that's finally saying what they actually meant to say. Incisive rhythmics that crack your sternum, melodies that wrap around your brain and won't let go. It's punchy, it's elegant, it's sincere in a way that feels dangerous these days. Track titles tell the story : "Docile," "Little Miss Perfect," "Brokenhearted," "Devil Inside I & II," "Va, je ne te hais point." These aren't throwaway pop-rock songs. There's weight here, real emotional architecture.

Le concept est assez lourd en fait : la vie qui te force en Plan B, Plan C, Plan D quand le Plan A foire. Un confinement qui te rend docile pendant que ton cœur hurle pour briser le moule. Des années à apprendre à être parfait alors que tout en toi se rebelle. Des relations qui crashent et brûlent. Et à travers tout ça, cette sensation de nager à contre-courant, de regarder la vie défiler par la fenêtre pendant que t’es coincé à l’arrière. « Against The Tide », enregistré à Studio La Colline dans le Tarn, mixé par Philippe Faraud (LUKE, Catleya, Hi Cowboy), masterisé par Raphaël Jonin, sonne comme un groupe qui dit enfin ce qu’il voulait vraiment dire. Rythmiques incisives qui te fendent le sternum, mélodies qui s’enroulent autour du cerveau et lâchent pas. C’est punchy, élégant, sincère d’une façon qui paraît dangereuse de nos jours. Les titres racontent l’histoire : « Docile », « Little Miss Perfect », « Brokenhearted », « Devil Inside I & II », « Va, je ne te hais point ». Ce sont pas des chansons pop-rock jetables. Y a du poids, une vraie architecture émotionnelle.
