SYMPHONIC METAL WITH A "WINNER" MENTALITY
I was just reading through the backstory for Epinikion while having a late afternoon snack, and it's probably one of the most unique "origin stories" I've come across lately. Usually, bands start in a garage or a basement; these guys started at the end of professional sports careers.
Je lisais l'histoire d'Epinikion en grignotant en fin d'après-midi, et c'est probablement l'une des « histoires d'origine » les plus uniques que j'aie rencontrées récemment. Habituellement, les groupes commencent dans un garage ou une cave ; ces gars-là ont commencé à la fin de carrières sportives professionnelles.
EPINIKION - Symphonic Metal with a "Winner" MentalityThe band was started by Robert and Renate, two former top-tier athletes/coaches. The name itself is a nod to Ancient Greece: an epinikion was a hymn sung for victorious athletes. They even have a phoenix in their logo to symbolize that transition from the sports arena to the music stage. It's a cool concept, and you can tell that "sports mentality" translates into their work ethic.

Le groupe a été fondé par Robert et Renate, deux anciens athlètes/entraîneurs de haut niveau. Le nom lui-même est un clin d'œil à la Grèce antique : un epinikion était un hymne chanté pour les athlètes victorieux. Ils ont même un phénix dans leur logo pour symboliser cette transition de l'arène sportive à la scène musicale. C'est un concept cool, et on sent que cette « mentalité sportive » se retrouve dans leur éthique de travail.
Musically, it's a mix of Robert's electric guitar and Renate's classical piano (which, funnily enough, started on her son's toy keyboard before they got serious). It's pure Symphonic Metal: think heavy riffs meeting those big, bombastic orchestral lines we all love.

Musicalement, c'est un mélange de la guitare électrique de Robert et du piano classique de Renate (qui, assez drôlement, a commencé sur le clavier-jouet de son fils avant que ça ne devienne sérieux). C'est du Symphonic Metal pur : imagine des riffs lourds rencontrant ces grandes lignes orchestrales grandioses qu'on aime tous.
I gave their track "In the Blink of an Eye" a spin, and I'll be honest: at first, I wasn't sure if the "progressive" elements they mentioned would clash with the symphonic side. But it actually works quite well. The guitar work is surprisingly crunchy, which balances out the more "subtle" classical piano moments.
J'ai écouté leur morceau « In the Blink of an Eye », et honnêtement : au début, je n'étais pas sûr que les éléments « progressifs » dont ils parlaient n'entrent pas en conflit avec le côté symphonique. Mais ça fonctionne plutôt bien. Le travail de guitare est étonnamment crunchy, ce qui équilibre les moments de piano classique plus « subtils ».
One thing I noticed, and this is a small detail, is that the production feels very "clean." Sometimes in Symphonic Metal, I like a little more grit in the low end, but here the clarity really lets the orchestral arrangements breathe. It's polished, professional, and you can definitely tell they've put in the "training hours" to get the live performances right.
Une chose que j'ai remarquée, et c'est un petit détail, c'est que la production semble très « propre ». Parfois dans le Symphonic Metal, j'aime un peu plus de grain dans les basses, mais ici la clarté laisse vraiment respirer les arrangements orchestraux. C'est poli, professionnel, et on sent clairement qu'ils ont mis les « heures d'entraînement » pour que les performances live soient bonnes.

If you're a fan of bands that lean into that epic, storytelling atmosphere but still keep the guitars front and center, Epinikion is definitely worth a look.
Si tu es fan des groupes qui jouent sur cette atmosphère épique et narrative tout en gardant les guitares au premier plan, Epinikion vaut vraiment le coup d'œil.
