When a band like Cortege hits the brakes, you usually expect the members to go quiet for a while, but Sebastian Bartek and Kamil Szuszkiewicz clearly had other plans. Instead of waiting around for a full lineup that never showed up, they just locked themselves in a studio as a duo and came out with Weak & Mortal. Their debut EP, The Darkest Places on the Earth, dropped on March 31st via A.D.G. Records, and honestly, the lack of extra band members might be the best thing that could've happened to them.

Quand un groupe comme Cortege s'arrête, on s'attend généralement à ce que les membres se fassent discrets un moment, mais Sebastian Bartek et Kamil Szuszkiewicz avaient d'autres plans. Au lieu d'attendre une formation complète qui n'est jamais venue, ils se sont enfermés en studio en duo et en sont ressortis avec Weak & Mortal. Leur premier EP, The Darkest Places on the Earth, est sorti le 31 mars via A.D.G. Records, et honnêtement, l'absence de musiciens supplémentaires pourrait être la meilleure chose qui leur soit arrivée.

This isn't your standard meat-and-potatoes death metal. It's got this weird, twitchy energy: think later-era Voivod crashing into the chaotic sampling of Igorrr or the jagged edge of Akercocke. There's a moment in "Human-infested" where the electronics kick in, and for a second, I had to double-check if I was still listening to the same record. It's unconventional, a bit anthemic in places, and definitely dark as hell.

Ce n'est pas le death metal basique standard. Il a cette énergie étrange, nerveuse : imaginez la période tardive de Voivod percutant le sampling chaotique d'Igorrr ou le tranchant d'Akercocke. Il y a un moment dans « Human-infested » où l'électronique entre en scène, et pendant une seconde, j'ai dû vérifier si j'écoutais toujours le même disque. C'est non conventionnel, un peu anthemic par endroits, et définitivement sombre comme l'enfer.

They recorded this at DiGaZ in the Czech Republic with Tom Pletnický, and you can tell he let them get weird with the final sound. Over twenty-five minutes and four tracks, they manage to pack in more ideas than some bands do in a full hour. "Blood communion" is particularly nasty: it has this heavy, grinding weight that just feels massive for only two guys. Ils ont enregistré ça au DiGaZ en République tchèque avec Tom Pletnický, et on sent qu'il les a laissés devenir bizarres sur le son final. En vingt-cinq minutes et quatre morceaux, ils parviennent à caser plus d'idées que certains groupes en une heure. « Blood communion » est particulièrement dégueulasse : il a ce poids lourd et grinçant qui semble massif pour seulement deux mecs.

If you're tired of the same old "verse-chorus-blastbeat" routine, these Polish guys are definitely worth a spin. It's raw, it's experimental, and it sounds like they're having a blast breaking all the rules.

Si vous en avez assez de la routine « couplet‑refrain‑blastbeat », ces Polonais valent vraiment le détour. C'est brut, expérimental, et ils semblent s'éclater à casser toutes les règles.

I'm going back to "The bad source" one more time. There's a sample buried in the mix toward the end that's been bugging me ; I swear I've heard it in an old sci-fi flick, but I can't quite place it yet. \m/
