As The Sun Falls just dropped their third full-length album, Songs From The Veil, through Theogonia Records. It came out May 22nd. Perfect timing if you happen to live somewhere under permanent rain, I guess. They're a Finnish melodic death metal outfit, and they are leaning incredibly hard into that whole miserable, frozen folklore vibe.

Timing parfait si vous vivez quelque part sous une pluie permanente, je suppose. Ce sont des Finlandais de death metal mélodique, et ils plongent à fond dans cette ambiance misérable de folklore glacé.
They've done the winter grief thing before on Kaamos and that Pohjoisen Sydän EP last year. This new one has ten tracks. It drags you through stuff like the Soulbird, the afterworld, and some myth about a Fire Fox igniting the northern skies. It sounds like a lot of heavy concept work on paper, but the actual music is just cold. Cold and wet. Sweeping melodies smashing directly into these blunt riffs. It definitely gets repetitive by the middle of the album. You think you've heard one frozen Finnish forest riff, you've heard them all.
Ils ont déjà exploré le chagrin hivernal sur Kaamos et l'EP Pohjoisen Sydän l'année dernière. Ce nouvel album contient dix morceaux. Il vous traîne à travers l'oiseau-âme, l'au-delà, et un mythe sur un renard de feu qui enflamme les cieux du Nord. Cela ressemble à beaucoup de travail conceptuel sur le papier, mais la musique elle-même est juste froide. Froide et humide. Des mélodies envahissantes qui s'écrasent sur des riffs contondants. Ça devient répétitif au milieu de l'album. On pense en avoir entendu un riff de forêt finlandaise gelée, on les a tous entendus.
Gogo Melone shows up to do some female vocals and screams on the record, and she also did the artwork. It breaks the monotony. She's also on a track called "Daughter Of The Air" alongside Joel Notkonen, who does spoken vocals there and tracked the drums for the album. Mikael Andersson mixed and mastered the whole thing at Soundport Studio, with Francisco Palomo editing the drums. The production is huge, maybe a little too smooth for my taste, but it carries that bleak atmospheric weight. It meanders when it should punch, but if you want to sit alone by a fire and feel sorry for yourself, this will do the trick nicely.
Gogo Melone apparaît pour faire des voix féminines et des hurlements sur le disque, et elle a aussi réalisé la pochette. Ça brise la monotonie. Elle est aussi sur un morceau intitulé « Daughter Of The Air » aux côtés de Joel Notkonen, qui fait les voix parlées et a enregistré la batterie pour l'album. Mikael Andersson a mixé et masterisé l'ensemble au Soundport Studio, avec Francisco Palomo à l'édition de la batterie. La production est énorme, peut-être un peu trop lisse à mon goût, mais elle porte ce poids atmosphérique morne. Ça vagabonde quand ça devrait frapper, mais si vous voulez vous asseoir seul près d'un feu et vous apitoyer sur votre sort, ça fera parfaitement l'affaire.
