FATE’S BIG SWING – UN DUO SYMPHONIQUE SURPRENANT

Debut records usually stink of desperation, but Element of Fate is doing something weirdly competent here. They're a duo split between D.C. and Portland, no idea how that works without a massive Zoom bill, but DREAMFALL doesn't sound like a remote project. It's got that heavy, symphonic sprawl you'd expect from the Nightwish camp, but it isn't just cheap cosplay.

Les premiers albums sentent généralement la désespoir, mais Element of Fate fait preuve d'une compétence étrange. C'est un duo partagé entre Washington D.C. et Portland, aucune idée de comment ça fonctionne sans une facture Zoom salée, mais DREAMFALL ne sonne pas comme un projet à distance. Il a cette ampleur symphonique qu'on attend du camp Nightwish, mais ce n'est pas du simple cosplay bon marché.

"Warhorse" is the one. It's got this driving, physical momentum that actually hits. Carol Phillips has this soaring voice, yeah, but it isn't just "pretty." There's a certain weight to it. A bit of dirt under the fingernails. She says it's personal, and you can tell: it doesn't feel like she's just reading off a D&D manual.

« Warhorse » est le morceau. Il a cet élan physique et entraînant qui frappe vraiment. Carol Phillips a cette voix planante, oui, mais ce n'est pas juste « joli ». Il y a un certain poids. Un peu de crasse sous les ongles. Elle dit que c'est personnel, et on le sent : ça ne donne pas l'impression qu'elle récite un manuel de D&D.

It's definitely too polished in spots. The production is so clean it almost hurts, and I usually prefer my metal to sound like it was recorded in a damp basement. Still, the progressive shifts keep it from getting boring. I'm not totally sold on the gothic "visualizer" vibe yet, but the music is solid enough to ignore the fluff. Not bad for a first go.

C'est clairement trop poli par endroits. La production est si propre qu'elle en devient presque douloureuse, et je préfère généralement mon metal sale, comme enregistré dans un sous‑sol humide. Pourtant, les changements progressifs empêchent l'ennui. Je ne suis pas totalement convaincu par l'ambiance gothique du « visualizer », mais la musique est assez solide pour ignorer le superflu. Pas mal pour une première tentative.
