To Discover: Jupiter Cyclops
VINTAGE SPACE JUNK FROM PHOENIX
Look, this isn't a brand-new release. Age of the UFOnaut has actually been sitting on Bandcamp since July 19th, 2024. But I just dug it up via Rockshots Production, and honestly, you need to hear it. It's the debut album from Jupiter Cyclops. They're a four-piece out of Phoenix, Arizona, and they play this heavily retro blend of 70s proto-metal, classic NWOBHM, and energetic hard rock.
Ce n'est pas une nouvelle sortie. Age of the UFOnaut traîne sur Bandcamp depuis le 19 juillet 2024. Mais je viens de le déterrer via Rockshots Production, et honnêtement, il faut l'entendre. C'est le premier album de Jupiter Cyclops. Ils sont un quatuor de Phoenix, en Arizona, et ils jouent un mélange rétro de proto-metal des années 70, de NWOBHM classique et de hard rock énergique.
The band apparently started out as a tiny two-piece doom project when scene veteran Aaron Peltz relocated from Southern California back in 2019. Now they've expanded. Dustin Lyon lays down these incredibly greasy, searing guitar riffs, while Jake Melius on bass and drummer Sam Callendar just thump away in the background. It feels very loud, very sweaty, and completely backward-looking in the best way. Think Black Sabbath jamming with Iron Maiden or Crobot.
Apparemment, le groupe a commencé comme un minuscule projet doom à deux lorsque le vétéran de la scène Aaron Peltz a déménagé du sud de la Californie en 2019. Maintenant, ils se sont étoffés. Dustin Lyon pose ces riffs de guitare incroyablement gras et brûlants, tandis que Jake Melius à la basse et le batteur Sam Callendar martèlent en arrière-plan. C'est très fort, très moite, et complètement rétrograde dans le bon sens. Imaginez Black Sabbath qui jamme avec Iron Maiden ou Crobot.
Lyrically, it's a total trip. They are singing about UFOs, witchcraft, and apocalyptic visions, but they don't take themselves too seriously. There's a decent dose of humor injected into the whole thing. It's got a lot of groovy, vintage throwbacks and hooks that actually stick in your head. I usually get bored of bands sucking up to the 1970s, but something about this just clicks. The production isn't overly slick either. It sounds like a band that has actually played a bunch of gigs across the Southwest, rather than a bunch of guys fixing their mistakes on a computer. It meanders a bit if you aren't into that specific old-school style, sure. But if you want to turn your speakers up and nod your head to some cosmic rock'n'roll, it does the job.
Sur le plan lyrique, c'est un vrai trip. Ils chantent les OVNI, la sorcellerie et les visions apocalyptiques, mais sans se prendre au sérieux. Il y a une bonne dose d'humour. Le disque regorge de références groovy et vintage, avec des refrains qui restent en tête. Je m'ennuie généralement des groupes qui singent les années 70, mais quelque chose ici fonctionne. La production n'est pas trop léchée non plus. On dirait un groupe qui a vraiment joué dans tout le Sud-Ouest, plutôt que des mecs qui corrigent leurs erreurs sur ordinateur. Ça peut traîner un peu si on n'aime pas ce style old-school, certes. Mais si vous voulez monter le son et hocher la tête sur du rock'n'roll cosmique, ça fait l'affaire.
