FINLAND'S SUM OF SEVEN FINALLY ARRIVES

Finland usually delivers the goods, but Sum of Seven (the artists formerly known as Sonus Corona) have had a hell of a time actually getting this record out. It's been years of line-up shifts and a serious accident involving guitarist Ari Lempinen that almost killed the band entirely. You can sort of feel that weight on Echoes of the Hypermind. It isn't just another clean, mathy prog exercise. It feels heavy. Not just the riffs, but the vibe.

La Finlande livre généralement la marchandise, mais Sum of Seven (ex-Sonus Corona) a eu un mal fou à sortir ce disque. Des années de changements de line-up et un grave accident impliquant le guitariste Ari Lempinen ont failli tuer le groupe. On ressent ce poids sur Echoes of the Hypermind. Ce n'est pas juste un énième exercice de prog propre et mathématique. C'est lourd. Pas seulement les riffs, mais l'ambiance.

It's definitely for the Vola and Haken crowd, though maybe a bit more grounded. Marko Loukamaa's vocals fit right in: he's got that soaring range but doesn't overdo the theatrics. The "Eternal Equation" track are probably the highlight for me. There's a lot of synth layering that could have turned into a mess, but somehow it just works. It feels like a brain working overtime.

C'est clairement destiné aux fans de Vola et Haken, même si c'est un peu plus ancré. Le chant de Marko Loukamaa colle parfaitement : il a cette tessiture planante mais sans en faire trop. Le morceau « Eternal Equation » est probablement mon préféré. Il y a beaucoup de nappes de synthé qui auraient pu virer au chaos, mais ça fonctionne. On a l'impression d'un cerveau en surchauffe.

Sometimes the concept gets a bit dense, and I'm not sure every transition is perfect. But who cares? It's honest. After everything they went through to finish this, the fact that it sounds this tight is a miracle. It's technical, yeah, but it's got a pulse.

Parfois, le concept devient un peu dense, et je ne suis pas sûr que toutes les transitions soient parfaites. Mais qui s'en soucie ? C'est honnête. Après tout ce qu'ils ont traversé pour finir ça, le fait que ce soit si serré est un miracle. C'est technique, certes, mais ça a du pouls.
