HEAVY WATER AND ITALIAN MOTHS

I usually get bored when a band starts talking about "philosophical concepts" and cyclical imagery. It usually means they're hiding a lack of riffs. But Northern Italy's The Valley actually back it up on their new single, "The River". It dropped May 15 through Volcano Records & Promotion, and honestly, it's pretty cool.
Je m'ennuie généralement quand un groupe se met à parler de « concepts philosophiques » et d'images cycliques. Cela signifie généralement qu'ils cachent un manque de riffs. Mais The Valley, dans le nord de l'Italie, assume ce choix sur leur nouveau single, « The River ». Il est sorti le 15 mai via Volcano Records & Promotion, et honnêtement, c'est plutôt cool.
It's this weird, hypnotic mix of progressive rock, grunge, and post-metal. You can definitely tell they listen to a lot of Tool and Mastodon. Like, a lot. They take those massive influences and do something essential with them. The track just shifts constantly, moving from these really quiet, emotionally fragile moments right into these sudden, heavy, cathartic openings. It actually feels like a river, I guess. Not sure why, but the tension works.
C'est un mélange étrange et hypnotique de rock progressif, de grunge et de post-metal. On sent qu'ils écoutent beaucoup Tool et Mastodon. Vraiment beaucoup. Ils prennent ces influences massives et en font quelque chose d'essentiel. Le morceau change constamment, passant de moments très calmes et fragiles à des ouvertures soudaines, lourdes et cathartiques. Ça ressemble à une rivière, je suppose. Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais la tension fonctionne.
Peter Doell mastered this one again, so it's got plenty of depth and character. Sounds huge.

They also put out an intense official music video on YouTube. If you've been following them, you'll notice the moth is back. It was in their last video for "Hypnagogia" and it's in their logo, too. Apparently, it closes out some artistic cycle they've been on for the past months. Whatever. It looks cool. If you haven't heard their older singles like "Magpie's Eyelid", "Eons", or "Like I Never Lived (Without You)", you should probably go fix that.
Ils ont également sorti un clip officiel intense sur YouTube. Si vous les suivez, vous remarquerez que le papillon de nuit est de retour. Il était dans leur dernière vidéo pour « Hypnagogia » et dans leur logo. Apparemment, cela clôt un cycle artistique qu'ils traversent depuis quelques mois. Peu importe. Ça a l'air cool. Si vous n'avez pas entendu leurs anciens singles comme « Magpie's Eyelid », « Eons » ou « Like I Never Lived (Without You) », vous devriez probablement y remédier.
