SHAKING THE WALLS FROM WHEELING
I've got the window cracked open to let some air in, but honestly, the neighbors are probably wondering what the hell is going on. I just threw on Last Rites, this new EP from Altared States that dropped a couple of weeks back, and it instantly blew the dust off my speakers.
J'ai entrouvert la fenêtre pour laisser entrer un peu d'air, mais honnêtement, les voisins doivent se demander ce qui se passe. Je viens de lancer Last Rites, ce nouvel EP d'Altared States sorti il y a quelques semaines, et ça a instantanément dépoussiéré mes enceintes.
These guys are thrash veterans out of Wheeling, West Virginia. They originally formed all the way back in 1990, split, and then got back together in 2019. You can usually tell when an older band is just going through the motions, but something about the opening minute of this thing just felt completely unapologetic. It's got that specific, blue-collar Northeast metal grit that you can't really fake in a studio.

On reconnaît généralement quand un groupe plus âgé fait du surplace, mais quelque chose dans la première minute de ce disque semblait complètement sans compromis. Il y a ce grain spécifique, ouvrier, du metal du Nord-Est qu'on ne peut pas vraiment simuler en studio.
The press release name-drops Megadeth and Anthrax, which makes sense, but what caught my attention was a comment from their guitarist, Mike Tronka, about wanting to keep the "raw spirit" alive. They recorded this over in Steubenville, Ohio, at a place called Aardvark Productions, and you can actually hear the amps pushing air. I love it when tracks just attack you right out of the gate and leave you completely floored. There was no warning, just this immediate punch that had me staring at the speakers, wondering what the hell just hit me.

It's listed as a mix of thrash and progressive metal, though to be honest, I'm mostly just feeling the straight-up, no-frills aggression. My coffee is sitting here getting cold, but I'm too busy staring at the speakers, waiting to see if the next track hits quite as hard as the last one.
C'est présenté comme un mélange de thrash et de metal progressif, mais pour être honnête, je ressens surtout l'agression directe et sans fioritures. Mon café est en train de refroidir, mais je suis trop occupé à fixer les enceintes, à attendre de voir si le prochain morceau frappe aussi fort que le précédent.
