THE NEW BATTLESOUL ALBUM IS OUT

We just spent the afternoon spinning The Wheel, and the first thing that hits you is how the folk melodies sit right against those heavier riffs. It doesn't feel like a lazy copy of what came before, but you definitely get those early In Flames and Moonsorrow hints running through the tracks. The guitar work on the album has a specific kind of bite to it that kept a couple of us debating whether the folk parts get buried or if they actually cut through the noise well enough.

Nous venons de passer l'après-midi à écouter The Wheel, et la première chose qui frappe, c'est la façon dont les mélodies folkloriques s'accordent avec ces riffs plus lourds. Ça ne ressemble pas à une copie paresseuse de ce qui a précédé, mais on retrouve clairement les premiers In Flames et Moonsorrow dans les morceaux. Le travail de guitare sur l'album a une certaine mordant qui a poussé certains d'entre nous à débattre pour savoir si les parties folkloriques sont enterrées ou si elles parviennent à traverser le bruit suffisamment bien.

I thought I'd skip it after one play, but that didn't happen, which probably says more about the record than I expected.

J'ai pensé que je passerais à autre chose après une écoute, mais ce n'est pas arrivé, ce qui en dit probablement plus long sur le disque que je ne l'aurais imaginé.

It turns out Thomas Ireland produced and engineered this thing up in Goderich, Ontario, and Maor Appelbaum handled the mastering over in California. The sound is clear, but it still keeps a rough edge that stops it from feeling too sterile or over-produced. We're relieved they didn't go down the hyper-polished route that ruins half the pagan metal releases these days. It's got that self-released, independent energy to it, which suits the style they are going for.

Il s'avère que Thomas Ireland a produit et enregistré l'album à Goderich, en Ontario, et que Maor Appelbaum s'est occupé du mastering en Californie. Le son est clair, mais il conserve un tranchant brut qui l'empêche d'être trop stérile ou surproduit. Nous sommes soulagés qu'ils n'aient pas emprunté la voie hyper-polie qui ruine la moitié des sorties de metal païen de nos jours. Il a cette énergie auto-produite et indépendante qui correspond au style qu'ils recherchent.

I'm still not fully sure if the folk parts actually "work" or if I just adjusted to them halfway through, because at some point the doubt just stopped being that interesting to chase down.

Je ne suis toujours pas totalement sûr que les parties folkloriques « fonctionnent » réellement ou si je me suis simplement adapté en cours de route, parce qu'à un moment donné, le doute a cessé d'être assez intéressant à poursuivre.

The digital album dropped back on January 15, 2026, so it's been out there for a few months now. If you want to see how the visual side matches the music, the video for "No Legacy" is up on YouTube, and the Bandcamp page is live for full streaming. We'll see how the rest of the material holds up on repeated plays, but this project is worth checking out if you miss that older folk-metal style.

L'album numérique est sorti le 15 janvier 2026, donc il est disponible depuis quelques mois maintenant. Si vous voulez voir comment le côté visuel s'accorde à la musique, la vidéo de « No Legacy » est sur YouTube, et la page Bandcamp est active pour l'écoute intégrale. Nous verrons comment le reste du matériel se comporte après plusieurs écoutes, mais ce projet vaut le détour si l'ancien style folk-metal vous manque.

I'm not sure I even have a final opinion yet, which is probably the point, or maybe just a convenient way of not deciding, depending on how generous you want to be about it.
And honestly, I need to stop overthinking this and just let it sit for a while.

Je ne suis même pas sûr d'avoir une opinion définitive, ce qui est probablement le but, ou peut-être juste une façon pratique de ne pas décider, selon votre degré d'indulgence.
Et honnêtement, je dois arrêter de trop réfléchir et laisser reposer tout ça un moment.
