THAT ATHENS SWAGGER TRAVELS WELL
Athens isn't exactly the first place that pops into my head when I think of classic, dirty sleaze rock, but Dismiss is apparently trying to fix that. Their debut album Funeral Fund is on the way, and they just dropped a single called "I Need" a few weeks back on May 15th.
Athènes n'est pas vraiment le premier endroit qui me vient à l'esprit quand je pense au sleaze rock classique glam, mais Dismiss essaie apparemment de remédier à cela. Leur premier album, Funeral Fund, est en route, et ils viennent de sortir un single intitulé « I Need » il y a quelques semaines, le 15 mai.
I gave their first track, "I Wanna Stay In The City," a spin, and the press blast talks a lot about a balance between 70s rock and 2000s alternative. To be honest, I'm not hearing much modern alt-rock in this at all. This is straight-up, Guns N' Roses worship from the Appetite era. It's got that specific, dangerous street swagger that a lot of bands try to fake but can't quite nail because they're too clean. Dismiss sounds like they actually live in the gutter they're singing about.
J'ai écouté leur premier morceau, « I Wanna Stay In The City », et le communiqué de presse parle beaucoup d'un équilibre entre le rock des années 70 et l'alternative des années 2000. Pour être honnête, je n'entends pas grand-chose d'alt-rock moderne là-dedans. C'est du pur hommage à Guns N' Roses, époque Appetite. Il y a ce swagger dangereux propre à la rue que beaucoup de groupes essaient de singer mais ne maîtrisent pas parce qu'ils sont trop propres. Dismiss donne l'impression de vivre vraiment dans le caniveau dont ils chantent.
They're heading over to the UK in July for a tiny five-date run, hitting places like London, Brighton, and York. Five shows is a brutally short tour, and looking at the schedule, it's basically an in-and-out mission. I always wonder how bands from places like Greece manage to fund these brief, chaotic UK trips just to play tiny rooms like the Hope & Anchor or The Pipeline, but if the live show is half as high-energy as the recording, those crowds are going to get flattened.
Ils se rendent au Royaume-Uni en juillet pour une petite série de cinq dates, à Londres, Brighton et York. Cinq concerts, c'est une tournée brutalement courte, et à en juger par le calendrier, c'est essentiellement une mission éclair. Je me demande toujours comment des groupes de pays comme la Grèce arrivent à financer ces brèves tournées chaotiques au Royaume-Uni pour jouer dans de petites salles comme le Hope & Anchor ou le Pipeline, mais si le live est à moitié aussi énergique que l'enregistrement, ces publics vont se faire laminer.
It's completely retro, it offers absolutely nothing new to the genre, but the raw attitude is completely there. If this had come out in 1988 nobody would've blinked. That's probably the compliment.
C'est complètement rétro, ça n'apporte absolument rien de nouveau au genre, mais l'attitude brute est bien là. Si c'était sorti en 1988, personne n'aurait sourcillé. C'est probablement le compliment.
