Upcoming Release: Mangled Carpenter

MANGLED CARPENTER'S NEW EP IS HARD TO PIN DOWN

We've been spinning Between Blood And Silence, the upcoming EP from Mangled Carpenter due out July 17th via Rottweiler Records and Broken Curfew Records. It's the follow-up to their 2023 release Salvation Syndrome, and to be completely blunt, it's a bit of a weird shift that's left the crew staring at the speakers trying to decide if we actually dig it.

Nous avons écouté Between Blood And Silence, le prochain EP de Mangled Carpenter qui sort le 17 juillet via Rottweiler Records et Broken Curfew Records. C'est la suite de leur album Salvation Syndrome de 2023, et pour être tout à fait franc, c'est un virage un peu bizarre qui a laissé l'équipe à fixer les enceintes en se demandant si on aime vraiment ça.

They're calling it an expansion of their deathgrind roots, but the title track opens up with these heavy, deliberate deathcore chugs that caught us completely off guard. At one point during "Carved," the tempo drops into this mechanical, slow groove that feels almost too caveman-simple, but then "The Absence Of Light" kicks in with this corrosive, aggressive grind that reminds you why you liked them in the first place. The weirdest moment by far is "Down, Down, To Goblin Town." The title sounds ridiculous, but the structure is strangely infectious, and we've had that dumb riff stuck in our heads all morning against our will.

Ils appellent ça une expansion de leurs racines deathgrind, mais le morceau-titre s'ouvre sur ces lourds chugs de deathcore délibérés qui nous ont complètement pris au dépourvu. À un moment donné sur « Carved », le tempo ralentit pour devenir ce groove mécanique et lent qui semble presque trop simple, mais ensuite « The Absence Of Light » arrive avec ce grind corrosif et agressif qui nous rappelle pourquoi on les aimait au départ. Le moment le plus étrange est de loin « Down, Down, To Goblin Town ». Le titre semble ridicule, mais la structure est étrangement contagieuse, et nous avons eu ce stupide riff coincé dans la tête toute la journée contre notre gré.

Seth Metoyer's vocals anchor the whole mess, shifting from intelligible barks to this totally unstable, harsh edge. Then, out of nowhere, they throw in a cover of Mortification's "Terminate Damnation" from the Scrolls Of The Megilloth days, alongside a blunt-force track called "Short, Sharp, Shock." I'm still not entirely sure if the experimental, mood-driven stuff works or if it just dilutes the grind, and honestly, the friction between the fast parts and the mechanical sluggishness is giving me a headache, but, I like this.

Le chant de Seth Metoyer ancre tout ce bazar, passant d'aboiements intelligibles à ce tranchant totalement instable et agressif. Puis, sans crier gare, ils lancent une reprise de « Terminate Damnation » de Mortification, de l'époque Scrolls Of The Megilloth, ainsi qu'un morceau contondant intitulé « Short, Sharp, Shock ». Je ne suis toujours pas sûr que le côté expérimental et axé sur l'ambiance fonctionne ou s'il dilue simplement le grind, et honnêtement, la friction entre les parties rapides et la lenteur mécanique me donne mal à la tête, mais, j'aime ça.

Somewhere during the second listen I stopped comparing it to their older material and just let the EP be its own strange beast.

Quelque part au cours de la deuxième écoute, j'ai arrêté de comparer à leur ancien matériel et j'ai juste laissé l'EP être sa propre bête étrange.
