To Discover: Sick Things
LATE TO THE PARTY BUT HARD ROCKING
Some albums don't need hype cycles or big rollout campaigns. They just land, quietly, and end up doing the job on their own terms. Too Beaucoup, the 2025 release from Quebec's Sick Things, is very much one of those records. It slipped into our inbox without much context, but within a couple of tracks it had already taken over the room.
Certains albums n'ont pas besoin de cycles de battage médiatique ou de grandes campagnes de lancement. Ils arrivent simplement, tranquillement, et finissent par faire le travail à leur manière. Too Beaucoup, la sortie 2025 des Québécois de Sick Things, fait partie de ces disques. Il est arrivé dans notre boîte de réception sans grand contexte, mais au bout de quelques morceaux, il avait déjà pris possession de la pièce.
Cam Turin, Patrick Bennett, Keith Turin, and Matt González basically sound like they got locked in a garage with nothing but old Thin Lizzy records and a pile of cranked Marshall amps. There's an Alice Cooper connection in the band's history, but the actual sound feels more like classic twin-guitar swagger mixed with a sharper, more modern vocal edge.

Il y a un lien avec Alice Cooper dans l'histoire du groupe, mais le son réel ressemble plutôt à de l'assurance de deux guitares classiques mélangée à une voix plus tranchante et moderne.
The single Waste My Time grabbed me immediately, but what surprised me was how often I ended up going back to the rest of the record. I actually put the album on expecting to pull out one or two standout tracks and move on. That didn't happen. Somewhere between Waste My Time and Thick As Thieves, I realized I had stopped doing anything else and was just listening.
Le single Waste My Time m'a tout de suite accroché, mais ce qui m'a surpris, c'est la fréquence à laquelle je suis revenu au reste du disque. Je me suis lancé dans l'album en m'attendant à en extraire un ou deux morceaux et à passer à autre chose. Ça n'a pas marché. Quelque part entre Waste My Time et Thick As Thieves, j'ai réalisé que j'avais arrêté de faire quoi que ce soit d'autre et que j'écoutais simplement.
What I like most is that the songs don't feel overworked. There's a looseness to the performances that makes everything breathe naturally. I kept expecting a weaker track to show up somewhere in the second half, especially around Memories or Hit The Fader, but it never really did. Maybe not every song hits with the same force, but there's very little here that feels like filler.
Ce que j'aime le plus, c'est que les chansons ne semblent pas surtravaillées. Il y a une souplesse dans les performances qui fait que tout respire naturellement. Je m'attendais à ce qu'un morceau plus faible apparaisse quelque part dans la seconde moitié, surtout autour de Memories ou Hit The Fader, mais ce n'est jamais vraiment arrivé. Peut-être que tous les morceaux ne frappent pas avec la même force, mais il y a très peu de remplissage ici.
The funny thing is that I thought Waste My Time would be the obvious standout, but I ended up spending just as much time going back to Thick As Thieves and Leave It On The Line. By the time Stranglehold rolled in near the end, I had completely stopped treating the album like background music.
Ce qui est drôle, c'est que je pensais que Waste My Time serait le morceau le plus marquant, mais j'ai fini par passer autant de temps à retourner à Thick As Thieves et Leave It On The Line. Lorsque Stranglehold est arrivé vers la fin, j'avais complètement cessé de traiter l'album comme une musique d'ambiance.
It turns out the band is heading back into the studio this summer to work on fresh material for later this year, which gives us a pretty good excuse to keep spinning Too Beaucoup while we wait.
If you missed it last year like we did, it might be worth correcting that mistake.
Il s'avère que le groupe retourne en studio cet été pour travailler sur du nouveau matériel pour plus tard dans l'année, ce qui nous donne une bonne excuse pour continuer à écouter Too Beaucoup en attendant.
Si vous l'avez manqué l'année dernière comme nous, il vaut peut-être la peine de corriger cette erreur.
