EPIC MELODEATH AND A WEIRD GEOGRAPHY LESSON
We've been spinning "White Raven," the new single from Finnish-Mexican outfit Ulthima. The track itself is a teaser for their sophomore album Midnight's Call, which is due out this autumn.

Musically, it completely abandons the hot Mexican desert for that freezing, classic Finnish melodeath sound. In fact, if someone played this to me blind, I would have guessed Helsinki long before Mexico City. The influence is that strong. They openly admit in the press kit that they wanted a rawer, less perfected production to keep the human element alive, and honestly, you can hear it in the way the keyboards and guitars interact. It doesn't have that sterile, click-track perfection that ruins a lot of modern symphonic death metal.

En fait, si on me l'avait fait écouter en aveugle, j'aurais deviné Helsinki bien avant Mexico. L'influence est si forte. Ils admettent ouvertement dans le dossier de presse qu'ils voulaient une production plus brute et moins parfaite pour garder l'élément humain, et honnêtement, on l'entend dans la façon dont les claviers et les guitares interagissent. Il n'a pas cette perfection stérile et click-track qui gâche beaucoup de death metal symphonique moderne.
Ricardo Escobar's guitar work came together quickly from just a single riff, and it has this driving, organic momentum that carries the whole track. Lyrically, they're tackling the journey from fearing death to accepting it, guided by a mythical white raven. It's definitely a bit of a metal cliché, as Ricardo himself points out, but Tuomas Antila's vocals deliver it with enough honest grit that you don't mind the poetic drama.

I actually went back to the ending a couple of times, not because I was trying to analyze it, but because something about it kept sticking in my head. The drum work from Ville Nummisalo has a rough, natural feel to it, and the more I listened, the more I found myself paying attention to the way the keyboards drift around the guitars rather than sitting on top of them. It's not the kind of detail you notice immediately, but it gives the whole track a bit more personality than a lot of modern melodic death metal releases.
Je suis revenu à la fin plusieurs fois, non pas pour l'analyser, mais parce que quelque chose me restait en tête. Le jeu de batterie de Ville Nummisalo a un aspect brut et naturel, et plus j'écoutais, plus je prêtais attention à la façon dont les claviers flottent autour des guitares plutôt que de se superposer. Ce n'est pas le genre de détail qu'on remarque immédiatement, mais ça donne au morceau un peu plus de personnalité que beaucoup de sorties de melodic death metal modernes.
