CHARLESTON’S PROGRESSIVE METALCORE DUO RETURNS WITH A SOPHOMORE FULL‑LENGTH
The brother‑to‑brother dynamic has always spawned some of the tightest, most intuitive chemistry in heavy music, and Charleston's Altarheart makes a strong case for that rule. What began back in 2023 as a solitary creative outlet for multi‑instrumentalist Anthony Conn transformed into a proper progressive duo when his brother Alex hopped behind the drum kit. A raw 2024 EP caught the underground's attention, leading to a signing with Rottweiler Records. Now, their sophomore full‑length Prone To Wander is locked in for a September 25th, 2026 release.

I went into this 12‑track album expecting the usual modern metalcore architecture, the standard blueprint of predictable verse‑chorus patterns stitched together by a massive, clinical breakdown. By the third track, I completely stopped trying to guess where the songs were heading. The Conn brothers treat these arrangements more like volatile open‑ended experiments. The opener "Wayward" throws you completely off balance, shifting aggressively from venomous growls and frantic tempos into these strange, pulsing electronic atmospheres that feel surprisingly necessary rather than just tacked on for texture.

Dès la troisième piste, j’ai complètement cessé d’essayer de deviner où les morceaux allaient. Les frères Conn traitent ces arrangements comme des expériences volatiles et ouvertes. L’ouverture « Wayward » vous déséquilibre complètement, passant agressivement de growls venimeux et de tempos frénétiques à d’étranges atmosphères électroniques pulsantes qui semblent étonnamment nécessaires, et non simplement plaquées pour le texture.
The true strength of the album lies in its deep emotional contrast. Tracks like "Consider The Lillies" seamlessly marry delicate, melancholic beauty with heavy, aggressive riffs, while "Rustbelt" sounds like a head‑on collision between peaceful, meditative passages and sheer sonic destruction. Anthony handles the mixing and mastering himself, ensuring the production leaves plenty of breathing room for his massive vocal range, which shifts naturally from deep, guttural barks to huge, soaring choruses. The band also recruits some excellent outside help, bringing in Scapegoat on "Mortal Man" and Michael Grice (The Light Superior) on the razor‑sharp, streamlined track "Weaken My Flesh."
La vraie force de l’album réside dans son profond contraste émotionnel. Des morceaux comme « Consider The Lillies » marient harmonieusement une beauté mélancolique délicate à des riffs lourds et agressifs, tandis que « Rustbelt » ressemble à une collision frontale entre des passages paisibles et méditatifs et une destruction sonore pure. Anthony assure lui‑même le mixage et le mastering, laissant à sa voix ample – qui passe naturellement d’aboiements profonds et gutturaux à d’immenses refrains envolés – tout l’espace nécessaire. If the rest of the full‑length manages to sustain this level of creative tension, late September is going to deliver one of the year's most compelling and genuinely unpredictable progressive releases. I'm highly curious to see how these dense, fluid arrangements actually translate to a live stage.
