What's New: Bitter Luck – "UA2069"
WASHINGTON D.C. QUARTET DELIVERS CLASSIC HARD ROCK WITH A MODERN EDGE
Sometimes a band changes its name and everything else stays the same. Sometimes it feels like a genuine fresh start. Listening to Bitter Luck, I get the impression it's the second option.
Parfois, un groupe change de nom et tout le reste reste identique. Parfois, cela ressemble à un véritable nouveau départ. En écoutant Bitter Luck, j'ai l'impression que c'est la deuxième option.
After bringing Mojo Aces to an end, the Washington D.C. quartet didn't spend much time looking back. Their debut EP Show Your Hand arrived at the end of 2025, and rather than slowing down afterwards, they went straight back into the studio. "UA2069" follows earlier single "Drag" and gives another glimpse of what appears to be a second EP on the horizon.
Après avoir mis fin à Mojo Aces, le quatuor de Washington D.C. n'a pas passé beaucoup de temps à regarder en arrière. Leur premier EP Show Your Hand est sorti fin 2025, et plutôt que de ralentir ensuite, ils sont retournés directement en studio. « UA2069 » succède au précédent single « Drag » et donne un autre aperçu de ce qui semble être un deuxième EP à l'horizon.
The title immediately caught my attention because it sounds strangely specific. As it turns out, it refers to an actual United Airlines flight the singer boarded years ago after making what was probably a questionable decision just before take‑off. It's one of those stories that could only happen to a rock musician, and somehow it became the inspiration for the song. Apparently the original version was colourful enough to require a radio edit, which tells you everything you probably need to know.
Le titre a immédiatement attiré mon attention car il semble étrangement spécifique. Il s'avère qu'il fait référence à un véritable vol United Airlines que le chanteur a pris il y a des années après avoir pris ce qui était probablement une décision discutable juste avant le décollage. C'est une de ces histoires qui ne pourraient arriver qu'à un musicien de rock, et elle est devenue l'inspiration de la chanson. Apparemment, la version originale était assez colorée pour nécessiter une version radio, ce qui vous dit tout ce que vous avez probablement besoin de savoir.
Musically, Bitter Luck sit comfortably somewhere between classic hard rock and modern heavy rock without sounding trapped in either era. You'll hear echoes of Aerosmith, Humble Pie and Guns N' Roses in the swagger, while the musicianship occasionally leans towards the more adventurous side of bands like Rush or The Winery Dogs. Those influences are there, but they never feel forced. The band sounds more interested in writing solid songs than proving how many records they own.
Musicalement, Bitter Luck se situe confortablement quelque part entre le hard rock classique et le heavy rock moderne, sans sonner prisonnier d'aucune des deux époques. On entend des échos d'Aerosmith, Humble Pie et Guns N' Roses dans le swagger, tandis que le jeu musical penche parfois vers le côté plus aventureux de groupes comme Rush ou The Winery Dogs. Ces influences sont là, mais elles ne semblent jamais forcées. Le groupe semble plus intéressé par l'écriture de chansons solides que par la preuve du nombre de disques qu'ils possèdent.
What stood out to me most was the chemistry between the musicians. Ean Eschenburg has the kind of voice that naturally fits this style, carrying enough grit without sacrificing melody, while Andrei Wells fills the songs with tasteful guitar work rather than endless soloing for the sake of it. Behind them, Will Gies and Eric Levy keep everything moving with a groove that gives the music plenty of weight without ever becoming overbearing.
Ce qui m'a le plus frappé, c'est la chimie entre les musiciens. Ean Eschenburg a le genre de voix qui s'intègre naturellement à ce style, avec assez de grain sans sacrifier la mélodie, tandis qu'Andrei Wells remplit les chansons d'un jeu de guitare plein de goût plutôt que de solos sans fin pour le plaisir. Derrière eux, Will Gies et Eric Levy maintiennent tout en mouvement avec un groove qui donne à la musique beaucoup de poids sans jamais devenir envahissant.
"UA2069" isn't trying to reinvent hard rock, and I don't think that's the goal. It simply delivers a strong, energetic song that feels honest about where it comes from. After spending some time with it, I'm curious to hear what the next EP has in store. If the rest of the material keeps the same balance between hooks, groove and musicianship, Bitter Luck may well become a name worth following beyond the Washington scene.
« UA2069 » n'essaie pas de réinventer le hard rock, et je ne pense pas que ce soit le but. Il délivre simplement une chanson forte et énergique qui semble honnête sur ses origines. Après avoir passé du temps avec elle, je suis curieux d'entendre ce que le prochain EP nous réserve. Si le reste du matériel maintient le même équilibre entre refrains accrocheurs, groove et musicalité, Bitter Luck pourrait bien devenir un nom à suivre au‑delà de la scène de Washington.
