Sleep have inspired countless bands over the last three decades, but surprisingly few tribute albums have really captured what makes them special. Cathedral of Smoke comes closer than most. Underground imprint Witching Buzz Records is stepping up to the altar on August 7th, 2026, with Cathedral of Smoke: A Tribute to SLEEP, a digital‑only compilation featuring ten international acts attempting to pay proper homage to the legendary pioneers of stoner doom.

The tracklist spans the entirety of Sleep's monolithic trajectory, stretching from their raw, early 1990s foundational days right up to their 2018 comeback era. What makes this compilation particularly intriguing on paper is the prominent inclusion of bands we've frequently crossed paths with before on the blog. France's own PACA‑based outsiders Poste942 break away from their usual eccentric "lambda rock" groove to step heavily into the smoke with "Hot Lava Man." Right alongside them, the Athenian heavy rock trio Fuzzing Nation, fresh off signing with Octopus Rising for their Mothertruck era, bring their seasoned, desert‑drenched fuzz to tackle the legendary "Marijuanaut's Theme."

You have American acts like Abel Blood tackling the massive grooves of "Giza Butler," legacy underground vocalists like Dee Calhoun taking on "From Beyond," and When the Deadbolt Breaks handling the absolute genre blueprint that is "Holy Mountain." Italy's Owls Over Oaks also digs back into 1991 to round out the European contingent with "The Suffering." From what I heard, rather than trying to clean up or modernize the legendary California trio's style, every single artist involved has deliberately focused on retaining the crawling tempos, suffocating low‑end frequencies, and psych‑tinged, dense atmospheres that define the riff‑worship blueprint.

Another pleasant surprise is the overall consistency. Tribute albums often swing wildly in quality from one track to the next, but that isn't really the case here. Despite the different backgrounds of the participating bands, the compilation flows remarkably well, helped by the shared appreciation for massive riffs, deep low‑end and unhurried pacing. With stunning cover art handled by Captain Maoos, this looks like a highly focused, feels like a genuine tribute of love for the underground fuzz scene.
