Some bands wear their influences so openly that you know exactly where they're coming from within the first minute. Melbourne's Cicadastone definitely fall into that category, but the interesting part is that "Falling In A Coma" never feels like a simple exercise in nostalgia.

Les Melbourneïens de Cicadastone entrent définitivement dans cette catégorie, mais ce qui est intéressant, c'est que « Falling In A Coma » ne ressemble jamais à un simple exercice de nostalgie.
Released today as the first single from the upcoming album Edge Of Life, due on January 15th, 2027 via XMusic, the track immediately settles into that familiar territory where grunge, hard rock and alternative metal naturally overlap. The Alice In Chains comparison is unavoidable, especially in the vocal harmonies, but after a while you stop thinking about influences and simply let the song carry itself.
Sorti aujourd'hui comme premier single du prochain album Edge Of Life, prévu pour le 15 janvier 2027 via XMusic, le morceau s'installe immédiatement dans ce territoire familier où le grunge, le hard rock et le metal alternatif se chevauchent naturellement. La comparaison avec Alice In Chains est inévitable, surtout dans les harmonies vocales, mais au bout d'un moment, on cesse de penser aux influences et on se laisse simplement porter par la chanson.
The guitars do most of the talking here. Big, weighty riffs, plenty of groove, and enough space in the arrangement for everything to breathe. Rather than chasing modern production trends or piling on unnecessary layers, Cicadastone keep things straightforward. It feels like a band relying on solid songwriting instead of studio tricks, and that's becoming surprisingly rare.

Lyrically, "Falling In A Coma" explores the slow temptation to disconnect from reality when life becomes overwhelming. Frontman Mat Robins describes it as a reflection on losing control and finding false comfort in emotional detachment. Thankfully, the music never becomes as bleak as the subject matter might suggest. There's enough melody running through the track to stop it sinking under its own weight.

One thing I appreciated is that the chorus doesn't try too hard to be bigger than the verses. It grows naturally, which makes the whole song feel more cohesive. By the end, I was less interested in comparing Cicadastone to their influences than I was in hearing where the rest of Edge Of Life might go. January is still a long way off, but "Falling In A Coma" does exactly what a lead single should do: it leaves you curious without giving everything away.
Une chose que j'ai appréciée, c'est que le refrain n'essaie pas trop d'être plus grand que les couplets. Il grandit naturellement, ce qui rend toute la chanson plus cohérente. À la fin, j'étais moins intéressé par la comparaison de Cicadastone avec leurs influences que par l'envie d'entendre où le reste d'Edge Of Life pourrait aller. Janvier est encore loin, mais « Falling In A Coma » fait exactement ce qu'un premier single doit faire : il vous laisse curieux sans tout dévoiler.
