To Discover: Diatribes – Degenerate
BRAZILIAN QUARTET DELIVERS FORTY MINUTES OF AGGRESSIVE, RIFF‑DRIVEN DEATH METAL
Some albums make you wonder where a band has been hiding all this time. That was my first reaction when I discovered Diatribes. Coming out of São Paulo, the Brazilian quartet isn't trying to reinvent death metal, and honestly, that's part of the appeal. Degenerate, released on March 20th, 2026 through Brutal Records, simply delivers forty‑odd minutes of aggressive, riff‑driven metal that knows exactly what it wants to be.
Certains albums vous font vous demander où un groupe se cachait tout ce temps. Ce fut ma première réaction en découvrant Diatribes. Venant de São Paulo, le quatuor brésilien n'essaie pas de réinventer le death metal, et honnêtement, c'est une partie de son attrait. Degenerate, sorti le 20 mars 2026 via Brutal Records, livre simplement une quarantaine de minutes de metal agressif et axé sur les riffs qui sait exactement ce qu'il veut être.
Brazil has always had a reputation for producing uncompromising heavy music, but Diatribes don't rely on that legacy alone. From the first few tracks, the album establishes its own identity by sitting comfortably between old‑school death metal, thrash aggression and groove‑heavy hooks. It's familiar territory, yet it never feels like the band is ticking boxes or chasing nostalgia.
Le Brésil a toujours eu la réputation de produire une musique heavy sans compromis, mais Diatribes ne se repose pas uniquement sur cet héritage. Dès les premières pistes, l'album établit sa propre identité en s'installant confortablement entre le death metal old‑school, l'agression thrash et des accroches lourdes et groovy. C'est un territoire familier, mais on n'a jamais l'impression que le groupe coche des cases ou court après la nostalgie.
The guitars were probably the first thing that grabbed me. Gladyson Rivero and Marcelo Souza strike a balance between precision and pure impact, switching naturally from tight, fast riffs to slower grooves that hit just as hard. There are plenty of technical moments, but they never come at the expense of the songs themselves. More than once, I caught myself following the riffs long after the track had finished.
Les guitares m'ont probablement été la première chose qui m'a attrapé. Gladyson Rivero et Marcelo Souza trouvent un équilibre entre précision et impact pur, passant naturellement de riffs rapides et serrés à des grooves plus lents qui frappent tout aussi fort. Il y a beaucoup de moments techniques, mais jamais au détriment des chansons elles‑mêmes. Plus d'une fois, je me suis surpris à suivre les riffs longtemps après la fin du morceau.
Another pleasant surprise is the production. Modern extreme metal sometimes ends up sounding so polished that every instrument loses its personality. That isn't the case here. Produced by drummer Niko Teixeira at Audiolab Extreme Studio, Degenerate keeps a welcome sense of grit. The guitars have bite, Sergio Roma's bass is allowed to occupy its own space, and the drums retain enough natural punch to keep everything feeling alive. Over the top of it all, Danilo Luna delivers a convincing performance, moving comfortably between deep growls and harsher mid‑range vocals without sounding forced.
Une autre agréable surprise est la production. Le metal extrême moderne finit parfois par sonner tellement poli que chaque instrument perd sa personnalité. Ce n'est pas le cas ici. Produit par le batteur Niko Teixeira au Audiolab Extreme Studio, Degenerate conserve un sens bienvenu du grain. Les guitares ont du mordant, la basse de Sergio Roma occupe son propre espace, et la batterie conserve assez de punch naturel pour que tout reste vivant. Par‑dessus tout, Danilo Luna livre une performance convaincante, passant confortablement des growls profonds à des voix mid‑range plus dures sans jamais sonner forcé.
If you're looking for a place to start, "Hostility Within" is an obvious choice. It barely lasts two and a half minutes, wastes no time on unnecessary introductions and captures the band's approach perfectly. Fast, direct and packed with groove, it's the kind of track that makes you want to hear what comes next. Elsewhere, songs like "My Own Hell" and "Last Enemy" show that Diatribes can stretch their songwriting a little further without losing the aggression that drives the whole record.
Si vous cherchez un point de départ, « Hostility Within » est un choix évident. Il dure à peine deux minutes et demie, ne perd pas de temps en introductions inutiles et capture parfaitement l'approche du groupe. Rapide, direct et plein de groove, c'est le genre de morceau qui donne envie d'entendre la suite. Ailleurs, des chansons comme « My Own Hell » et « Last Enemy » montrent que Diatribes peut étendre un peu plus son écriture sans perdre l'agression qui anime tout l'album.
What stayed with me after several listens wasn't just the heaviness. It was the confidence. For a debut album, Degenerate sounds remarkably focused. The band isn't trying to prove how technical they are or how many influences they can squeeze into a single song. They trust the riffs, they trust the songs, and more often than not, that's exactly what carries the album. Will Degenerate change the face of extreme metal? Probably not. But after spending some time with it, I'm not convinced that's the point. Diatribes have delivered a solid debut built on strong songwriting, honest production and plenty of memorable riffs. Sometimes that's more than enough to earn a place in the regular rotation.
Ce qui m'est resté après plusieurs écoutes n'était pas seulement la lourdeur. C'était la confiance. Pour un premier album, Degenerate sonne remarquablement concentré. Le groupe n'essaie pas de prouver à quel point il est technique ou combien d'influences il peut entasser dans une seule chanson. Ils font confiance aux riffs, ils font confiance aux chansons, et la plupart du temps, c'est exactement ce qui porte l'album. Degenerate va‑t‑il changer la face du metal extrême ? Probablement pas. Mais après avoir passé du temps avec lui, je ne suis pas convaincu que ce soit le but. Diatribes a livré un premier album solide, construit sur une écriture solide, une production honnête et beaucoup de riffs mémorables. Parfois, c'est plus qu'assez pour mériter une place dans la rotation régulière.
