TOKYO‑BASED PROJECT DELIVERS AN IMMERSIVE INDUSTRIAL METAL EXPERIENCE
To be honest, industrial metal isn't a genre I spend much time with. So when Hanging Doll, the upcoming EP from Tokyo‑based project GodFrost, landed in my inbox, I knew I was stepping well outside my usual comfort zone. What I didn't expect was how immersive it would become.
Pour être honnête, le metal industriel n'est pas un genre auquel je consacre beaucoup de temps. Alors quand Hanging Doll, le prochain EP du projet tokyoïte GodFrost, est arrivé dans ma boîte mail, je savais que je sortais de ma zone de confort habituelle. Ce que je n'avais pas prévu, c'est à quel point il allait devenir immersif.
The first listen left me a little unsure. The cold electronic pulse, the mechanical rhythms, the oppressive atmosphere... it isn't the kind of record that reveals itself straight away. It actually took me a few spins before everything started falling into place, and I'm glad I stuck with it.
La première écoute m'a laissé un peu perplexe. Le pouls électronique froid, les rythmes mécaniques, l'atmosphère oppressante... ce n'est pas le genre d'album qui se révèle immédiatement. Il m'a fallu quelques écoutes avant que tout ne commence à prendre sa place, et je suis content d'être resté.
Once it clicks, you begin to notice how carefully everything has been put together. The industrial elements never feel like decoration added on top of the guitars; they're the heartbeat of the music. Mixed by Lee Popa (Ministry, Killing Joke), the production has a rough, almost physical quality. The programmed beats hit like heavy machinery, but they never sound lifeless or sterile.
Une fois que ça fait tilt, on commence à remarquer à quel point tout a été soigneusement assemblé. Les éléments industriels ne ressemblent jamais à une décoration ajoutée par‑dessus les guitares ; ils sont le cœur battant de la musique. Mixé par Lee Popa (Ministry, Killing Joke), la production a une qualité rugueuse, presque physique. Les beats programmés frappent comme des machines lourdes, mais ils ne sonnent jamais sans vie ou stériles.
One of the biggest surprises is the vocal work. Instead of relying on the same voice throughout the EP, Frost brings in Luna Midnight and Sara, and that choice changes everything. Luna adds a darker, almost gothic atmosphere to tracks like "Nefarious" and "Seasons End," while Sara's performances on "Escape from Reality" and the title track bring a more melodic, emotional side to the record. That contrast keeps the music breathing when it could easily have become overwhelming.
L'une des plus grandes surprises est le travail vocal. Au lieu de s'appuyer sur la même voix tout au long de l'EP, Frost fait appel à Luna Midnight et Sara, et ce choix change tout. Luna ajoute une atmosphère plus sombre, presque gothique, à des morceaux comme « Nefarious » et « Seasons End », tandis que les performances de Sara sur « Escape from Reality » et le titre éponyme apportent un côté plus mélodique et émotionnel à l'album. Ce contraste permet à la musique de respirer alors qu'elle aurait facilement pu devenir écrasante.
"Escape from Reality" was probably the moment everything came together for me. Just when you think you've settled into its mechanical groove, the guitars suddenly open the song up and give it an unexpected sense of space. It's heavy, but not in the obvious way. The tension comes as much from the atmosphere as it does from the riffs.

Au moment où l'on croit s'être installé dans son groove mécanique, les guitares ouvrent soudainement la chanson et lui donnent un sens inattendu de l'espace. C'est lourd, mais pas de manière évidente. La tension vient autant de l'atmosphère que des riffs.
Then comes "Seasons End." After four tracks of relentless industrial pressure, the closing song changes the mood completely. Slower, darker and far more introspective, it feels like watching the smoke clear after the chaos. It isn't the ending I was expecting, but it leaves a lasting impression and gives the EP a real sense of closure.
Puis vient « Seasons End ». Après quatre morceaux de pression industrielle implacable, le morceau de clôture change complètement d'ambiance. Plus lent, plus sombre et bien plus introspectif, on a l'impression de regarder la fumée se dissiper après le chaos. Ce n'est pas la fin à laquelle je m'attendais, mais elle laisse une impression durable et donne à l'EP un vrai sentiment de clôture.
What stayed with me most wasn't simply the heaviness. It was the atmosphere. Frost isn't trying to overwhelm the listener with endless aggression or technical fireworks. He's building a world, and by the end of these nineteen minutes, I realised I'd stopped analysing the music and was simply letting it pull me in. Hanging Doll probably won't connect with everyone on the first listen. It certainly didn't with me. But if you're willing to spend a little time with it, you'll discover an EP that's darker, richer and far more nuanced than its industrial label might suggest. I'll definitely be curious to hear where GodFrost takes this project next.
Ce qui m'est resté le plus, ce n'était pas seulement la lourdeur. C'était l'atmosphère. Frost n'essaie pas de submerger l'auditeur avec une agression sans fin ou des feux d'artifice techniques. Il construit un monde, et à la fin de ces dix‑neuf minutes, j'ai réalisé que j'avais cessé d'analyser la musique pour me laisser simplement emporter. Hanging Doll ne parlera probablement pas à tout le monde dès la première écoute. Ce ne fut certainement pas le cas pour moi. Mais si vous êtes prêt à y consacrer un peu de temps, vous découvrirez un EP plus sombre, plus riche et bien plus nuancé que ce que son étiquette industrielle pourrait suggérer. Je serai certainement curieux de voir où GodFrost mènera ce projet ensuite.
