SWEDISH COMPOSER TURNS MEDIEVAL LEGENDS INTO EPIC ATMOSPHERIC METAL
Some places leave such a strong impression that they almost seem destined to become music. That was clearly the case for Swedish composer Johan Berg, whose visit to Germany's Kyffhäuser mountain became the starting point for "Barbarossa," the latest release from his solo project, History by Metal.

C'est clairement le cas pour le compositeur suédois Johan Berg, dont la visite du mont Kyffhäuser en Allemagne est devenue le point de départ de « Barbarossa », la dernière sortie de son projet solo, History by Metal.
I'll admit I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I first pressed play. The historical concept immediately caught my attention, but it only took a couple of listens before the music itself became the real focus. Inspired by the legend of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, said to be sleeping beneath the Kyffhäuser mountain until the empire needs him once again, the song manages to turn that old tale into something surprisingly immersive.
J'avoue que je ne savais pas trop à quoi m'attendre quand j'ai appuyé sur play. Le concept historique a immédiatement attiré mon attention, mais il n'a fallu que quelques écoutes pour que la musique elle‑même devienne le véritable centre d'intérêt. Inspirée par la légende de l'empereur Frédéric Barberousse, qui dormirait sous le mont Kyffhäuser jusqu'à ce que l'empire ait à nouveau besoin de lui, la chanson parvient à transformer cette vieille histoire en quelque chose d'étonnamment immersif.
Rather than relying on speed or sheer aggression, "Barbarossa" takes its time. The melodies unfold gradually, giving the track a weight that feels almost cinematic without becoming overblown. There is a strong sense of space throughout the song, and the atmosphere is what stayed with me long after it ended.
Plutôt que de s'appuyer sur la vitesse ou l'agression pure, « Barbarossa » prend son temps. Les mélodies se déploient progressivement, donnant au morceau un poids qui semble presque cinématographique sans devenir excessif. Il y a un fort sentiment d'espace tout au long de la chanson, et c'est l'atmosphère qui est restée avec moi longtemps après la fin.
Curiosity led me to listen to "Ållebergsryttarna" immediately afterwards. Exploring the Swedish legend of the twelve sleeping knights beneath Ålleberg mountain, it complements "Barbarossa" remarkably well. Together, the two tracks reveal the real identity of History by Metal: this isn't simply a metal project inspired by history, but one that tries to give individual legends and historical places their own musical identity.
La curiosité m'a poussé à écouter « Ållebergsryttarna » immédiatement après. Explorant la légende suédoise des douze chevaliers endormis sous le mont Ålleberg, elle complète remarquablement bien « Barbarossa ». Ensemble, les deux morceaux révèlent la véritable identité de History by Metal : ce n'est pas simplement un projet metal inspiré par l'histoire, mais un projet qui tente de donner aux légendes et aux lieux historiques leur propre identité musicale.
One thing I appreciate is that Johan Berg doesn't seem tied to a rigid formula. Guest musicians and different vocal approaches allow each release to develop its own personality instead of forcing every song into the same mould. If you're drawn to melodic, atmospheric metal with a genuine interest in folklore and European history, History by Metal is well worth discovering. The concept feels sincere, the execution is solid, and "Barbarossa" leaves me curious to hear where Johan Berg takes the project next.
Une chose que j'apprécie, c'est que Johan Berg ne semble pas lié à une formule rigide. Des musiciens invités et des approches vocales différentes permettent à chaque sortie de développer sa propre personnalité au lieu de forcer chaque chanson dans le même moule. Si vous êtes attiré par le metal mélodique et atmosphérique avec un intérêt sincère pour le folklore et l'histoire européenne, History by Metal mérite d'être découvert. Le concept semble sincère, l'exécution est solide, et « Barbarossa » me laisse curieux de savoir où Johan Berg mènera le projet ensuite.
