FRENCH POWER METAL VETERANS EMBRACE A DYSTOPIAN SCI‑FI CONCEPT
French power metal has never really disappeared. It just quietly kept doing its thing while trends came and went, and Kingcrown have become one of the scene's most reliable names. With Jo and David Amore, both well known from Nightmare, at the core of the band, the foundations are already solid. Moonfall, due on September 4th, 2026 via Rockshots Records, feels less like a reinvention than a natural step forward.

Il a simplement continué tranquillement à faire son chemin pendant que les tendances allaient et venaient, et Kingcrown est devenu l'un des noms les plus fiables de la scène. Avec Jo et David Amore, tous deux bien connus de Nightmare, au cœur du groupe, les fondations sont déjà solides. Moonfall, prévu pour le 4 septembre 2026 via Rockshots Records, ressemble moins à une réinvention qu'à une progression naturelle.
The first preview comes with the video for "Nothing", and it immediately suggests a band aiming a little further than before. Rather than leaning on familiar fantasy imagery, Moonfall embraces a dystopian science‑fiction storyline built around technology, fractured timelines and survival. It's an ambitious concept, but thankfully the songs don't disappear behind it.

Plutôt que de s'appuyer sur l'imagerie fantastique familière, Moonfall embrasse un scénario de science‑fiction dystopique construit autour de la technologie, des chronologies fracturées et de la survie. C'est un concept ambitieux, mais heureusement, les chansons ne disparaissent pas derrière lui.
One detail I genuinely liked is the way the story carries over from Nova Atlantis. "Lost Horizon" continues the narrative of the World War II B‑17 pilot thrown into the year 2045, giving both albums a stronger sense of continuity instead of feeling like separate chapters.
Un détail que j'ai vraiment apprécié est la façon dont l'histoire se poursuit depuis Nova Atlantis. « Lost Horizon » continue le récit du pilote de B‑17 de la Seconde Guerre mondiale projeté en 2045, donnant aux deux albums un sentiment de continuité plus fort au lieu de ressembler à des chapitres séparés.
Musically, Kingcrown stay firmly rooted in classic European power metal. You'll inevitably hear echoes of Iron Maiden, Helloween and Gamma Ray, especially in the twin‑guitar melodies and the big vocal choruses. At the same time, the production, handled by the band before Simone Mularoni completed the mix and mastering at Domination Studio, keeps everything clear without sanding away the energy. The riffs stay sharp, the choruses have room to breathe, and nothing feels buried under unnecessary layers.
Musicalement, Kingcrown reste fermement ancré dans le power metal européen classique. On entend inévitablement des échos d'Iron Maiden, Helloween et Gamma Ray, notamment dans les mélodies à deux guitares et les grands refrains vocaux. En même temps, la production, assurée par le groupe avant que Simone Mularoni ne termine le mixage et le mastering au Domination Studio, garde tout clair sans gommer l'énergie. Les riffs restent tranchants, les refrains ont de l'espace pour respirer, et rien ne semble enterré sous des couches inutiles.
Listening to the first material, what stands out isn't so much a dramatic stylistic shift as a stronger sense of confidence. The band sound comfortable with what they are, while allowing themselves to stretch the concept a little further than before. That's often a better recipe than trying to reinvent everything at once.
En écoutant les premiers morceaux, ce qui ressort n'est pas tant un changement stylistique dramatique qu'un sentiment de confiance plus fort. Le groupe semble à l'aise avec ce qu'il est, tout en s'autorisant à étendre un peu plus le concept qu'avant. C'est souvent une meilleure recette que d'essayer de tout réinventer d'un coup.
Having had the chance to hear Moonfall ahead of its release, I can honestly say that "Nothing" is only part of the story. The explosive opening of "We Are Kingcrown" sets the tone immediately, while "Lost Horizon" stands out as another real highlight, blending the album's concept with some of its strongest songwriting. More importantly, these aren't isolated moments. The rest of the record maintains that same level of consistency, making Moonfall an album I've found myself coming back to regularly since the first listen. It never feels like it's chasing bigger ideas at the expense of memorable songs, and that's probably its greatest strength.
Ayant eu la chance d'écouter Moonfall avant sa sortie, je peux honnêtement dire que « Nothing » n'est qu'une partie de l'histoire. L'ouverture explosive de « We Are Kingcrown » donne immédiatement le ton, tandis que « Lost Horizon » se distingue comme un autre véritable point fort, mêlant le concept de l'album à l'une de ses meilleures compositions. Plus important encore, ce ne sont pas des moments isolés. Le reste de l'album maintient ce même niveau de constance, faisant de Moonfall un album auquel je reviens régulièrement depuis la première écoute. Il ne donne jamais l'impression de courir après de grandes idées au détriment de chansons mémorables, et c'est probablement sa plus grande force.
