Some releases demand your attention immediately. Others take their time, slowly pulling you into their world until you realize you've stopped doing whatever else you were supposed to be doing. Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat, the latest EP from Dutch trio Prophets Of Thwaites, definitely belongs to the second category.
Certaines sorties exigent votre attention immédiatement. D'autres prennent leur temps, vous attirant lentement dans leur monde jusqu'à ce que vous réalisiez que vous avez arrêté tout ce que vous étiez censé faire. Released on March 17th, 2026, this two‑track EP barely crosses the fourteen‑minute mark, yet it feels surprisingly substantial. The band describes its sound as "Ethereal Doom Metal," and for once, the label actually makes sense. There is plenty of doom here, but it's wrapped in layers of atmosphere, melody and texture that keep the music from becoming oppressively heavy.

Le groupe décrit son son comme du « Ethereal Doom Metal », et pour une fois, l'étiquette a du sens. Il y a beaucoup de doom ici, mais il est enveloppé de couches d'atmosphère, de mélodie et de texture qui empêchent la musique de devenir trop lourde.
The opening track, "A Deadlock," took a little longer to reveal itself. The first guitar lines drift in almost hypnotically before the song gradually builds into something much heavier. What immediately stood out to me was the contrast between the weight of the riffs and Esma Larabi's vocals. Rather than competing with the instruments, her voice seems to float above them, giving the song an almost dreamlike quality. The more I listened, the more that balance became the track's real strength.
Le morceau d'ouverture, « A Deadlock », a mis un peu plus de temps à se révéler. Les premières lignes de guitare dérivent presque hypnotiquement avant que la chanson ne s'élève progressivement vers quelque chose de beaucoup plus lourd. Ce qui m'a immédiatement frappé, c'est le contraste entre le poids des riffs et la voix d'Esma Larabi. Plutôt que de rivaliser avec les instruments, sa voix semble flotter au‑dessus d'eux, donnant à la chanson une qualité presque onirique. Plus j'écoutais, plus cet équilibre devenait la vraie force du morceau.
There are moments that reminded me of the darker side of 1990s alternative rock. I caught traces of bands like Alice In Chains and Soundgarden here and there, but never enough to feel derivative. The doom foundation remains firmly in place, wrapped in thick layers of fuzz and atmosphere.
Il y a des moments qui m'ont rappelé le côté plus sombre du rock alternatif des années 1990. J'ai surpris des traces de groupes comme Alice In Chains et Soundgarden par endroits, mais jamais assez pour que cela semble dérivatif. La base doom reste fermement en place, enveloppée d'épaisses couches de fuzz et d'atmosphère.
The title track, "Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat," is where the EP really clicked for me. The rhythm section takes on a larger role, creating a slow, deliberate pulse that drives the song forward. Nothing feels rushed. Instead, the band allows the tension to build naturally, letting each section breathe before moving to the next. By the time the track reaches its final moments, it feels less like a song and more like a gradual descent into a darker, more immersive space.
Le morceau éponyme, « Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat », est celui où l'EP a vraiment fonctionné pour moi. La section rythmique prend une place plus importante, créant un pouls lent et délibéré qui fait avancer la chanson. Rien ne semble précipité. Au lieu de cela, le groupe laisse la tension se construire naturellement, laissant chaque section respirer avant de passer à la suivante. Lorsque le morceau atteint ses derniers instants, il ressemble moins à une chanson qu'à une descente progressive dans un espace plus sombre et plus immersif.
What I appreciate most about this EP is its restraint. Prophets Of Thwaites never seem interested in overwhelming the listener with complexity or endless layers of effects. Everything serves the atmosphere. Every riff, every vocal line and every shift in dynamics feels carefully placed. I've gone back to these two tracks several times since the first listen, and that's usually a good sign. Plenty of albums make a strong first impression before fading quickly. Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat does the opposite. It reveals a little more of itself each time.
Ce que j'apprécie le plus dans cet EP, c'est sa retenue. Prophets Of Thwaites ne semble jamais intéressé par le fait de submerger l'auditeur avec de la complexité ou des couches d'effets sans fin. Tout sert l'atmosphère. Chaque riff, chaque ligne vocale et chaque changement de dynamique semble soigneusement placé. Je suis revenu sur ces deux morceaux plusieurs fois depuis la première écoute, et c'est généralement un bon signe. Beaucoup d'albums font une forte première impression avant de s'estomper rapidement. Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat fait l'inverse. Il révèle un peu plus de lui‑même à chaque écoute.
For a release that lasts only fourteen minutes, it leaves a surprisingly lasting impression. Fans of doomgaze, atmospheric doom and emotionally driven heavy music should absolutely spend some time with this one.
Pour une sortie qui ne dure que quatorze minutes, elle laisse une impression étonnamment durable. Les fans de doomgaze, de doom atmosphérique et de musique heavy émotionnelle devraient absolument passer du temps avec celle‑ci.
