To Discover: Scraper - "Infinite Journey"
PROGRESSIVE THRASH WITH GRIT, SCI‑FI CONCEPT AND CRUSHING RIFFS FROM THE RUHR
Look, whenever an album gets pitch‑marked as "progressive thrash with a sci‑fi concept," I usually prepare myself for a lot of overly technical guitar flexing that forgets how to write actual riffs. I've sat through enough of those records to be a little wary. So when I put on Infinite Journey by Scraper, I'll admit I was trying to analyze everything during the first couple of tracks, tracking the sudden tempo shifts, the Voivod‑ish angular guitars, and where the story was going. But honestly? Somewhere around the third song, I caught myself turning the volume up and just getting hit by the sheer physical weight of the record.
Écoutez, chaque fois qu'un album est présenté comme du « thrash progressif avec un concept de science‑fiction », je me prépare généralement à beaucoup de démonstrations techniques de guitare qui oublient comment écrire de vrais riffs. J'ai assez écouté de ces albums pour me méfier un peu. Alors quand j'ai mis Infinite Journey de Scraper, j'avoue que j'essayais d'analyser tout pendant les deux premiers morceaux, en suivant les changements de tempo soudains, les guitares anguleuses à la Voivod, et où l'histoire allait. Mais honnêtement ? Quelque part autour du troisième morceau, je me suis surpris à monter le volume et à me faire frapper par le poids physique de l'album.
What really grabbed me is that these guys from the German Ruhr region didn't lose their grit. You can feel that heavy, industrial backbone in the music, but instead of playing basic straightforward thrash, they layer in these dark, moody passages and crushing mid‑tempo death metal grooves. They might throw a frantic, Kreator‑style attack at you and then suddenly drop into a strange, dissonant melody, but it never feels like they're just showing off. It actually fits the mood.
Ce qui m'a vraiment accroché, c'est que ces gars de la région de la Ruhr en Allemagne n'ont pas perdu leur côté brut. On sent cette colonne vertébrale lourde et industrielle dans la musique, mais au lieu de jouer du thrash simple et direct, ils y ajoutent des passages sombres et mélancoliques et des grooves death metal mid‑tempo écrasants. Ils peuvent vous lancer une attaque frénétique à la Kreator et puis soudainement plonger dans une mélodie étrange et dissonante, mais on n'a jamais l'impression qu'ils font simplement du spectacle. Cela correspond en fait à l'ambiance.
By the time I reached the end of the album, I realized I hadn't even thought about skipping a track or checking the time. The whole thing just rolls forward with a relentless kind of energy that keeps you locked in. In the end, Infinite Journey works so well because Scraper never forgot the most important thing underneath all the progressive ambition: the riffs have to hit hard. And on this one, they definitely do.
Quand je suis arrivé à la fin de l'album, j'ai réalisé que je n'avais même pas pensé à passer un morceau ou à regarder l'heure. L'ensemble avance avec une énergie implacable qui vous tient captif. Au final, Infinite Journey fonctionne si bien parce que Scraper n'a jamais oublié la chose la plus importante sous toute cette ambition progressive : les riffs doivent frapper fort. Et sur celui‑ci, ils le font définitivement.
