TUNISIAN BLACK METAL UNIT DELIVERS RAW, OLD‑SCHOOL UNDERGROUND DARKNESS
Tunisian black metal is not exactly the first scene that comes to mind when people talk about extreme music. Coming from a country rarely mentioned in black metal discussions, the band carries that feeling of a group building something far away from the usual underground centres.

Venant d'un pays rarement mentionné dans les discussions sur le black metal, le groupe porte ce sentiment d'un groupe qui construit quelque chose loin des centres underground habituels.
Formed in 2023 by vocalist Lord Vladimir and bassist Balor, Valak quickly expanded into a four‑piece with guitarists Aziz Hafsi and Yassin Lajnef. Instead of spending years hiding in the shadows, they introduced themselves with "In the name of Valak" in late 2024, followed by their debut EP We Are Valak Legion in April 2025.

What is interesting about Valak is that their approach goes beyond simply creating music. The band has also become involved in pushing their local scene forward, notably through the Tunisian black metal split‑compilation released via the Black Metal Artists platform in 2025. There is a real sense of community behind the project, something that has always been one of the most important parts of underground extreme metal.

Their first live appearance at the Nox Inferno festival on February 7th, 2026, was an important step. After months of preparation, the band captured that performance and released it digitally as Nox Inferno Live via Bandcamp. And honestly, this is where Valak's identity becomes even clearer.

Musically, the band doesn't try to reinvent black metal. They don't need to. Their strength comes from embracing the raw, hostile atmosphere of the genre's early years. Cold melodic leads, aggressive tremolo‑picked riffs and a deliberately harsh approach create a sound that feels rooted in the old underground tradition rather than chasing modern trends.
Musicalement, le groupe n'essaie pas de réinventer le black metal. Ils n'en ont pas besoin. Leur force vient de l'adoption de l'atmosphère brute et hostile des premières années du genre. Des leads mélodiques froids, des riffs agressifs en tremolo picking et une approche délibérément abrasive créent un son qui semble enraciné dans la vieille tradition underground plutôt que de courir après les tendances modernes.
There is something refreshing about hearing a band fully commit to this kind of uncompromising darkness. The production leaves room for imperfections, the riffs remain direct, and the whole thing carries that feeling of a group playing because they genuinely believe in the music rather than because they are looking for a wider audience.

The themes are familiar territory for black metal: blasphemy, war, mortality and human darkness. But with Valak, the important part is not necessarily the subject matter itself. It is the conviction behind it. They understand that extreme metal has always been about atmosphere and intent as much as technical ability. We Are Valak Legion and Nox Inferno Live offer a glimpse into a Tunisian scene that deserves more attention. Valak are still a young band, but they already show the most important quality for any underground act: a clear identity and the determination to defend it. Keep an eye on this band. The darkness is not only coming from the usual places anymore.
