Five years after Undertaker, Franche‑Comté doomers Athabas return with Salem, an 8‑track opus that marks a darker, far more personal turning point for the band. What surprised us most on first listen wasn't just the sheer heaviness, but how naturally the switch to French lyrics hits. It strips away any remaining distance, giving Fa Berreur's delivery a raw, unvarnished intensity that feels deeply personal. The arrival of JC Reiss behind the kit brings a stiffer, punchier metal edge, introducing double‑bass drive into their signature sludge and doom foundations.

Cinq ans après Undertaker, les doomers de Franche‑Comté Athabas reviennent avec Salem, un opus de 8 titres qui marque un tournant plus sombre et bien plus personnel pour le groupe. Ce qui nous a le plus surpris dès la première écoute, ce n'est pas seulement la lourdeur, mais la façon naturelle dont le passage au français frappe. Cela supprime toute distance restante, donnant à l'interprétation de Fa Berreur une intensité brute et sans fard qui semble profondément personnelle. L'arrivée de JC Reiss derrière les fûts apporte un côté metal plus rigide et percutant, introduisant la double pédale dans leurs fondations sludge et doom.

"En Exil"

Musically, Athabas leans heavily into the dark, crushing lineage of Sabbath, Paradise Lost, and Crowbar without sounding like a throwback. Halfway through "En Exil", the clean guitars and spoken‑word passages build an atmosphere so heavy it becomes almost suffocating. Tracks like "La Neuvième Porte" push that tension even further through repetitive, hypnotic riffing layered with synths, while guest vocal monologue on the title track reinforces the album's ritualistic atmosphere.

Musicalement, Athabas s'inscrit lourdement dans la lignée sombre et écrasante de Sabbath, Paradise Lost et Crowbar sans sonner comme une réplique. À la moitié de « En Exil », les guitares claires et les passages parlés construisent une atmosphère si lourde qu'elle en devient presque suffocante. Des morceaux comme « La Neuvième Porte » poussent cette tension encore plus loin avec un riffing répétitif et hypnotique couplé à des synthés, tandis que le monologue vocal invité sur le morceau éponyme renforce l'atmosphère rituelle de l'album.

Engineered, mixed, and mastered by bassist Silvère MG at Gears From The Grave, the production leaves enough mud on the boots while keeping every riff sharp. It feels less like a polished studio effort and more like a band carving out their own dark niche. When the final notes fade, you're left with a heavy, lingering sense of exhaustion that only authentic doom metal can trigger.

Enregistré, mixé et masterisé par le bassiste Silvère MG au Gears From The Grave, la production laisse assez de boue aux bottes tout en gardant chaque riff tranchant. Cela ressemble moins à un effort studio poli qu'à un groupe qui se taille sa propre niche sombre. Quand les dernières notes s'éteignent, on reste avec un sentiment lourd et persistant d'épuisement que seul le doom metal authentique peut provoquer.
