GEORGIA HORROR PUNK/DOOM UNIT DELIVERS A DIRTY, SWAMPY, HOME‑MADE THIRD FULL‑LENGTH
Operating out of Georgia since the early 90s, Sugar Virus have built their underground status on a peculiar mix: horror punk hookiness blended with heavy southern doom riffs. Their third full‑length, released through Spooky Heaven Records, leans heavily into that raw, home‑made sound. What immediately stands out is Jason Virus's vocal approach. The Danzig and Misfits influence is undeniable, but there's an odd Elvis‑style croon underneath that gives tracks like "Blood Beach" a distinct, retro horror vibe. The production was handled entirely by Jason Virus himself, giving the guitars a thick, fuzzy sludge texture instead of a modernly engineered sheen.
Opérant en Géorgie depuis le début des années 90, Sugar Virus a bâti son statut underground sur un mélange particulier : l'accroche du horror punk mêlée à des riffs doom lourds du sud. Leur troisième album, sorti via Spooky Heaven Records, s'appuie lourdement sur ce son brut et fait maison. Ce qui ressort immédiatement, c'est l'approche vocale de Jason Virus. L'influence de Danzig et des Misfits est indéniable, mais il y a une sorte de crooner à la Elvis en dessous qui donne à des morceaux comme « Blood Beach » une vibe horrifique rétro distincte. La production a été entièrement assurée par Jason Virus lui‑même, donnant aux guitares une texture sludge épaisse et fuzzy au lieu d'un éclat moderne.

I was a bit unsure during the first couple of tracks if the DIY mix would hold up across ten songs without sounding muddy. But the rhythm section keeps enough bounce in the doom‑laden grooves to stop the tracks from dragging under all that low‑end fuzz. The production won't be for everyone, and honestly, I wasn't sure about it at first either. But once those heavy grooves settle in, that dirty, swampy sound starts to make perfect sense.
J'étais un peu incertain pendant les deux premiers morceaux, me demandant si le mix DIY tiendrait sur dix titres sans devenir boueux. Mais la section rythmique garde assez de rebond dans les grooves doom pour empêcher les morceaux de traîner sous tout ce fuzz dans les graves. La production ne plaira pas à tout le monde, et honnêtement, je n'étais pas sûr non plus au début. Mais une fois que ces grooves lourds s'installent, ce son sale et marécageux commence à avoir parfaitement du sens.
