To be completely honest, when I saw that Sons Of Cult were replacing their original vocalist Jaume Vilanova for their second album, Revenge, I had my doubts. Heavy Metal bands aiming for an authentic 80s feel live or die by their frontperson, and changing that balance on a second record is always a gamble. But the moment "Steel Miles" kicks off, those worries completely vanished. Maria J. Lladó's vocals don't just fit the classic riffs, she brings a natural punch and grit that makes the whole band sound broader and more confident.
Pour être tout à fait honnête, quand j'ai vu que Sons Of Cult remplaçait leur chanteur original Jaume Vilanova pour leur deuxième album, Revenge, j'avais des doutes. Les groupes de Heavy Metal qui visent un son authentique des années 80 vivent ou meurent par leur chanteur, et changer cet équilibre sur un deuxième album est toujours un pari. Mais dès que « Steel Miles » démarre, ces inquiétudes disparaissent complètement. La voix de Maria J. Lladó ne se contente pas de s'adapter aux riffs classiques, elle apporte un punch et un grain naturels qui élargissent et renforcent la confiance du groupe.
"Our Heroes Never Die"
What I respect most about Revenge is that it doesn't try to sound like a modern, ultra‑quantized metal record. Recorded by guitarist Vicente J. Payá and mixed by Davide Billia, the mixing leaves the instruments with a rough, room‑like tone instead of burying everything under a wall of digital noise. On a track like "Our Heroes Never Die", the band leans unapologetically into that Iron Maiden and Saxon style of twin‑guitar leads and steady, unhurried pacing. Somewhere around the middle of "We Are Not Alone", I realized I was no longer listening to critique the lineup change; I was just nodding along to the groove.
Ce que je respecte le plus dans Revenge, c'est qu'il n'essaie pas de sonner comme un album de metal moderne ultra‑quantifié. Enregistré par le guitariste Vicente J. Payá et mixé par Davide Billia, le mix laisse aux instruments un son brut et naturel, au lieu de tout enterrer sous un mur de bruit numérique. Sur un morceau comme « Our Heroes Never Die », le groupe s'appuie sans complexe sur ce style de guitares jumelées et de rythme posé à la Iron Maiden et Saxon. Quelque part au milieu de « We Are Not Alone », j'ai réalisé que je n'écoutais plus pour critiquer le changement de line‑up ; je hochais simplement la tête en suivant le groove.
Sons of Cult
I went in expecting a standard tribute to the NWOBHM era, but ended up letting the whole 8‑track record play out twice in a row. If you like heavy metal that sounds like a band actually playing together in a garage rather than a polished studio project, Revenge is definitely worth a spin this September.
Je m'attendais à un hommage standard à l'ère NWOBHM, mais j'ai fini par écouter l'album de 8 titres deux fois de suite. Si vous aimez le heavy metal qui sonne comme un groupe qui joue ensemble dans un garage plutôt qu'un projet studio poli, Revenge mérite vraiment une écoute en septembre.
