Review: GODFROST - "Hanging Doll"
TOKYO INDUSTRIAL METAL PROJECT DELIVERS A GENUINELY NASTY SLAB OF MACHINE‑DRIVEN NOISE
Tokyo industrial metal project GODFROST will release their new EP Hanging Doll on September 18th via Louisiana‑based label Brutal Records. Dropping names like Ministry, KMFDM, and Tool in a debut press sheet is a classic red‑flag maneuver. It's the easiest way to make computer‑generated industrial noise sound important before anyone has actually pressed play. I fired up Hanging Doll expecting a tired collection of leftover 90s tropes that belonged in a bargain bin, not in a modern metal rotation. What actually caught me off guard is how filthy and suffocating the record actually sounds. Instead of relying on shiny, modern electro‑metal gimmicks, tracks like "Escape from Reality" and the title track hit with jagged, heavy‑hitting rhythm guitars and a genuinely bleak atmosphere. The production doesn't try to sanitize the performance; the machine‑like beats feel oppressive rather than robotic, giving the songs a cold, claustrophobic weight that actually sticks.

J'ai lancé Hanging Doll en m'attendant à une collection fatiguée de tropes des années 90 bons pour un bac de soldes, pas pour une rotation de metal moderne. Ce qui m'a vraiment surpris, c'est à quel point l'album sonne sale et suffocant. Au lieu de s'appuyer sur des gadgets électro‑metal modernes et clinquants, des morceaux comme « Escape from Reality » et le titre éponyme frappent avec des guitares rythmiques acérées et percutantes et une atmosphère véritablement lugubre. La production n'essaie pas d'assainir la performance ; les beats machiniques semblent oppressants plutôt que robotiques, donnant aux chansons un poids froid et claustrophobe qui reste vraiment.

The real wildcard here is the vocal dynamic split between Luna Midnight and Sara. Shifting between haunting, gothic clean passages and harsh, venomous rasps keeps the EP from collapsing into monotone industrial chugging. It's dark, unpolished, and surprisingly aggressive. I expected a sterile studio trick. I got a genuinely nasty slab of machine‑driven noise.
La vraie carte maîtresse ici est la dynamique vocale partagée entre Luna Midnight et Sara. Passer de passages clairs gothiques et obsédants à des rasp venimeux et agressifs empêche l'EP de s'effondrer dans un chugging industriel monotone. C'est sombre, non poli et étonnamment agressif. Je m'attendais à une astuce studio stérile. J'ai eu une véritable plaque de bruit machinique et méchant.
