Review: Margarita - "Abysses of Melancholia"
PARISIAN DOOM/SLUDGE TRIO DELIVERS A CRUSHING, UNFILTERED DEBUT FULL‑LENGTH
Parisian doom/sludge trio Margarita will release their debut full‑length album Abysses of Melancholia on October 9th via Electric Valley Records. When a press release stacks up doom, sludge, heavy psych, and shoegaze while weaving in heavy poetic descriptions of fractured identities and inner chaos, I prepare for the worst. Nine times out of ten, that level of bio‑artistic pretension means you're about to hear forty minutes of stagnant drone where actual riffs are swapped for an endless loop of reverb pedals and atmospheric posture. I hit play on Abysses of Melancholia expecting a slow, uninspired slog hiding behind high‑concept moody tags. What actually lands on Abysses of Melancholia is a far nastier and heavier wall of noise than expected. Instead of getting lost in hypnotic shoegaze filler, tracks like "Not a Mother" and "Abyssal Pain" lean straight into thick, crushing sludge riffs anchored by a dense, low‑end bass fuzz. The addition of subtle synths and electronic percussion doesn't dilute the heavy foundation; it adds a cold, suffocating weight that makes the slow‑burning tempos hit even harder.

The dual vocal approach between Karen and Julie gives the album a raw, unvarnished emotional core. Shifting from distant, haunting melodies to abrasive delivery, the vocals cut through the wall of distortion without needing pristine studio polish. It's heavy, bleak, and carries a genuine bite. I expected an over‑thought atmospheric experiment. I got a crushing, unfiltered slab of sludge‑doom that leaves a bruise.
