FINNISH DEATH/PROGRESSIVE OUTFIT DELIVERS A RAZOR‑SHARP PIECE OF PROGRESSIVE DEATH METAL
Finnish death/progressive metal outfit Of Spite have returned with "Serpent Coil," the lead single from their upcoming EP Raisu, set for release next month. Hiding a release behind pseudo‑philosophical babble about open wounds and stumbling time is a classic red flag in the Finnish scene. It usually means the band is about to deliver forty minutes of self‑indulgent noise designed to confuse the listener rather than crush them. I hit play on "Serpent Coil" expecting a messy, over‑complicated track lost in its own weirdness. What actually hits on "Serpent Coil" is a far more brutal and relentless slab of death metal than the bizarre promo text implies. Instead of hiding behind weird gimmickry, the track locks into a heavy, stuttering progressive groove driven by sharp guitar work and a punishing rhythm section. The track shifts between chaotic death metal aggression and sudden, eerie rhythmic pauses, giving the song an unpredictable tension.

It carries a greasy, unpolished edge that sounds like it was born in a damp Finnish basement rather than a polished studio. I went in expecting a pretentious Scandinavian art project. I got a razor‑sharp piece of progressive death metal that hits like a brick.
