Los Angeles dystopian black metal band Abhoria have unveiled "Ambition and Delusion," a new single and video ahead of their second full‑length album, The Gateway, due in 2027 via Black Lion Records. Building on the complex, death‑metal‑tinged black metal established on their 2024 debut Depths, "Ambition and Delusion" shifts deliberately through mid‑paced dissonant chords, driving tremolo picking, and sharp blast‑beat attacks. The most striking arrangement choice is an unexpected steel guitar interlude performed by vocalist Ben Pitts, serving as an unconventional bridge into a clean, melodic guitar solo.

Stepping away from standard genre tropes, the lyrics tackle an eccentric 19th‑century publishing magnate and socialite, James Gordon Bennett, Jr. Best known for his erratic behavior and for financing the disastrous 1879 USS Jeannette Arctic expedition, Bennett is framed here through a first‑person perspective that dissects an ego‑driven, self‑serving quest for redemption. Directed by Hunter Lamar / Digital Myle, the accompanying music video mirrors this historical backdrop by contrasting performance footage with a silent‑film visual aesthetic complete with period title cards. The track was mixed by Herbrand Larsen at Conclave and Earshot Studios and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios. Between its dissonant riffs, unexpected steel guitar passage, and lyrics drawn from a bizarre chapter of Arctic exploration, "Ambition and Delusion" gives Abhoria a distinctive angle on black metal.
