GERMAN OUTFIT BLENDS SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRATIONS WITH DRIVING DEATH METAL AND NINTENDO‑ERA NOSTALGIA

Combining symphonic orchestrations with death metal is a tightrope walk. Lean too far into the synthesized horns, and you end up sounding like a generic film score with blast beats slapped underneath; lean too far the other way, and the arrangements get lost in a mud‑fight of distorted guitars. For Paderborn's Heretics, their third single "Smell the Ashes", dropped September 4th ahead of their sophomore full‑length Of Poets and Prophets, marks their first full dive into orchestral territory, and they manage to pull it off without losing their heavy edge.

"Smell the Ashes" (Official Video)

If the title triggers a bit of gamer nostalgia, that's entirely intentional: "Smell the Ashes" draws directly from the dystopian atmosphere of Half‑Life 2 (specifically echoing the G‑Man's iconic opening line). But instead of relying on cheesy video game soundbites or cheap chiptunes, Heretics translates that bleak, Combine‑occupied cityscape into an aggressive, fast‑paced death metal track with an ominous cinematic backdrop. Think Amon Amarth's driving Gothenburg‑style rhythm section crashing headfirst into the grand, theatrical weight of Septicflesh or Fleshgod Apocalypse.

Engineered, mixed, and mastered by guitarist Tim Lobner at New World Studios, the track keeps the rhythm section remarkably punchy. The blast beats cut through with clean precision, while the orchestral layers provide a cold, imposing vault above the chugging riffage rather than suffocating it. The song builds systematically toward a spacious, bombastic finale, which makes total sense given that the band deliberately penned this track as the closing chapter for the upcoming album. Adding a bit of emotional weight to the release, the accompanying behind‑the‑scenes video serves as a final bow for founding member and guitarist Thomas Langehenke, who steps away from the lineup after this cycle.

It's a big, dramatic track, but one that remembers the cardinal rule of melodic death metal: no matter how grand your symphonic arrangements are, the riffs still have to do the heavy lifting. "Smell the Ashes" delivers on both fronts.
