ITALIAN MUSICIAN DELVES INTO SOUTHERN GOTHIC DOOM BLUES WITH A SURPRISING AMOUNT OF GRIT
When an Italian musician steps away from their main metal band (in this case, Asphodelia) to make a "Southern Gothic doom blues" record, my immediate knee‑jerk reaction is to wonder if it's going to feel authentic or just sound like someone binge‑watched True Detective and tried to copy King Dude. But LORDIAN's debut album, Black Pastoral, actually leans into that dusty, broken‑down Americana vibe with a surprising amount of grit. Due out digitally on October 22nd, the seven‑track release mixes heavy doom slowness with slide guitars, dark blues, and corrupted gospel imagery. Conceptually, it reads like a collection of bleak parables about abandoned faith; there's even a song story where Christ shares a warm beer with the Devil beside a dying gas station in the desert. The single "Dust Gospel" gives a pretty clear picture of what he's building here: slow‑crawling doom riffs fused with a swampy, haunted atmosphere.
Quand un musicien italien quitte son groupe metal principal (dans ce cas, Asphodelia) pour faire un disque de « Southern Gothic doom blues », ma réaction immédiate est de me demander si cela va sonner authentique ou juste comme quelqu'un qui a enchaîné True Detective et tenté de copier King Dude. Mais le premier album de LORDIAN, Black Pastoral, s'appuie réellement sur cette vibe Americana poussiéreuse et délabrée avec une quantité surprenante de grain. Prévu en digital le 22 octobre, cette sortie de sept titres mélange la lenteur lourde du doom avec des guitares slide, du blues sombre et une imagerie gospel corrompue. Conceptuellement, cela se lit comme une collection de paraboles lugubres sur la foi abandonnée ; il y a même une histoire de chanson où le Christ partage une bière tiède avec le Diable à côté d'une station-service mourante dans le désert. Le single « Dust Gospel » donne une image assez claire de ce qu'il construit ici : des riffs doom rampants fusionnés avec une atmosphère marécageuse et hantée.
Because the record was written, recorded, and produced entirely as a one‑man project (before getting mixed and mastered at Walls Of Sleep Studio), it has that solitary, unpolished edge it needs. It's obviously not going to hit the spot if you're looking for fast riffs or aggressive blast beats, but if you dig the dark storytelling side of Zeal & Ardor, Me and That Man, or Nick Cave, this is a cool, atmospheric detour. It's heavy, slow, and thoroughly bleak: just the kind of moody solo record that fits well as the autumn days get colder.
Parce que le disque a été écrit, enregistré et produit entièrement en tant que projet solo (avant d'être mixé et masterisé au Walls Of Sleep Studio), il possède ce bord solitaire et non poli dont il a besoin. Cela ne va évidemment pas faire mouche si vous cherchez des riffs rapides ou des blast beats agressifs, mais si vous aimez le côté sombre et narratif de Zeal & Ardor, Me and That Man ou Nick Cave, c'est un détour cool et atmosphérique. C'est lourd, lent et complètement lugubre : exactement le genre de disque solo atmosphérique qui convient bien à mesure que les jours d'automne se refroidissent.
