SWEDISH BLACK METAL VETERANS RETURN AFTER A DECADE WITH A COLD, HONEST PIECE OF UNDERGROUND METAL
If you only know Småland as the play area in IKEA, Swedish black metal veterans Myhrding are here to set the record straight. Formed back in 2006 in the dense, silent woods of Jönköping, the band takes its name from the Myling, the restless spectres of unbaptized children in Scandinavian folklore. Ten years after their last full‑length 1350, they've finally emerged from the dark with a brand new five‑track EP, Echoes from the Past, out now via Downfall Records. Dropping a short 5‑track EP after a ten‑year drought turns out to be the best way to cut straight to the point. There's zero filler here. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel or chasing modern, over‑polished production trends, the quartet doubles down on the classic, melancholic Swedish black metal tone they've been refining for nearly two decades.

Formé en 2006 dans les bois denses et silencieux de Jönköping, le groupe tire son nom du Myling, ces spectres agités d'enfants non baptisés du folklore scandinave. Dix ans après leur dernier album 1350, ils ont enfin émergé de l'obscurité avec un tout nouvel EP de cinq titres, Echoes from the Past, disponible via Downfall Records. Sortir un court EP de 5 titres après dix ans de disette s'avère être la meilleure façon d'aller droit au but. Il n'y a aucun remplissage ici. Au lieu d'essayer de réinventer la roue ou de courir après les tendances de production modernes et trop polies, le quatuor mise à fond sur le ton classique et mélancolique du black metal suédois qu'il peaufine depuis près de deux décennies.
"Echoes from the Past"
Opening with "The Genesis of Death," the dual guitar assault of A. Green and D. Jonasson immediately sets an icy, atmospheric tempo. But it's the second track, "Småland," that really anchors the record. It's a bitter, grim homage to their home soil, balancing mid‑tempo tremolo picking, sorrowful melodies, and raw, throat‑shredding vocals from drummer/vocalist T. Bergström. By the time the closer "Den Slutgiltiga Striden" rolls around, the band leaves you in a landscape of pure Scandinavian ruin and historical gloom. Echoes from the Past doesn't rely on flashy gimmicks or trendy studio tricks. It's a cold, honest piece of underground black metal made by musicians who clearly respect their roots. If you're longing for the raw, sorrowful bite of early‑2000s Swedish black metal, this record hits right where it needs to.
S'ouvrant sur « The Genesis of Death », l'assaut à deux guitares d'A. Green et D. Jonasson installe immédiatement un tempo glacé et atmosphérique. Mais c'est le deuxième morceau, « Småland », qui ancre vraiment l'album. C'est un hommage amer et sinistre à leur terre natale, équilibrant un tremolo picking mid‑tempo, des mélodies douloureuses et des voix brutes et déchirantes du batteur/chanteur T. Bergström. Au moment où le morceau de clôture « Den Slutgiltiga Striden » arrive, le groupe vous laisse dans un paysage de pure ruine scandinave et de mélancolie historique. Echoes from the Past ne s'appuie pas sur des gadgets tape‑à‑l'œil ou des astuces studio à la mode. C'est une pièce froide et honnête de black metal underground faite par des musiciens qui respectent clairement leurs racines. Si vous aspirez à la morsure brute et douloureuse du black metal suédois du début des années 2000, ce disque frappe exactement là où il faut.
